What do Pirates eat? Well, back in about 1996 when I realized that God was sending Pirates every 2 years or so with no sign of slowing down, I figured I’d better give some serious thought to how and what we would feed our motley crew. Well, for cheap inexpensive, nourishment you can’t beat beans. So, I taught my Pirates to enjoy eating beans. To this day, when the Pirates come in the galley and ask what’s for supper, when I tell ‘em it’s rice and beans, they hug my neck and kiss my face. Today I’ll give you my first installment of recipes for Pirate grub. No guarantee your Pirates will enjoy them. But, it’s hearty fare, nutritious and cheap inexpensive.
This recipe needs about a 5 qt pot.
Lentil Stew ( my personal favorite)
1 lb Lentils
1 handful Barley (or not)
6 C Water (broth if you want)
1 Bay Leaf (or 2)
2 t. Salt
Simmer for about 30 min.
Add
1 lb of browned Sausage (gr. beef will do, if that’s what you have)
1 large can Tomato Sauce (or 2 sm. tomato paste, or 2 cans of diced tomato)
some more Water, maybe 4 C ( depending on what you used for tomatoes)
4 stalks Celery, tops and all, diced
2-3 large Carrots, diced
1 large Onion, diced
2 cloves Garlic, mutilated
1 T Sea Salt (of course)
1 t. Oregano (Pirates love to harvest herbs for me)
Bring it to a boil and then simmer for about an hour. Stir it occasionally and keep the lid on. That gives you enough time to cook some Brown Rice and make a salad.

[...] Monday – Lentil Stew [...]
Oh! This is my favorite of all of your recipes! I ate this for a week straight before I found the little one to be allergic to legumes…
…
You could try using red lentils, however, I think they’re more expensive. Maybe another small bean would work, but you’d have to soak ‘em and cook ‘em longer.
I think my hubby might be a little scarred from too many lentil casseroles in his childhood – but I’ve waited an appropriate amount of time, so I’m ready to give lentils another shot.
He has, however, asked me to keep pinto beans on hand. I can fill a 6 qt. crockpot for just over a dollar. Can’t beat that!
Thank you for the recipe, hubby would love it! I on the other hand have never been able to enjoy a bean there is something about that squishy texture that makes me not enjoy it
. Hubby takes them any and every way I can make ‘em.
