Pets fer Pirates

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed

Yeah, we have parrots, 7 of ‘em. But, to me, that’s fairly normal. We’ve had birds, off and on, for over 20 years.

I just got through chasing a rabbit, so to speak, over at Life in a Shoe, reading about their escaped tarantula. That wasn’t a surprise (I knew about it at the time it happened), but I was surprised by the comments of folks who thought it was something to loose sleep over! Which made me think y’all might be interested to read about some of our pets.

In addition to the parrots (ok, they’re cockatiels,

but cockatiels ARE parrots) we have a parakeet and two finches.

We have a dog. (I’m yawning, are y’all yawning?)

There are 25 gerbils. Yes, that’s more than I’d like, but tell that to the gerbils!

Strange though is seems, we have only one rabbit.

Cannonball Jack has a Leopard Gecko.

We have 5 snakes. One is a Mexican Milksnake, three are Grey-band Kingsnakes, and one is a Ball Python.

I almost forgot, I have a tarantula.

But the pet I thought you would be interested in actually belongs to The Princess. Her name is Medusa, she’s about 10 inches long, she eats water-bugs for a living, and she lives under my sofa, or my stove, or my fridge. She’s a Tokay Gecko and she lives wherever she can make a living. Yes, she has run of the house. She can’t do her job shut up in a cage. Oh she has a cage, and we put her in it when she’s eaten so many water-bugs that I don’t EVER, EVER see them anymore. Then, after living the easy life, eating store-bought crickets for a few months, I’ll start seeing those horrible, horrible, nasty, horrible water-bugs again, and Medusa gets evicted from her comfy cage.

I never can decide which Medusa likes better, captivity or freedom. From her perspective, each has it’s perks. Out of the cage she enjoys the freedom to go where she pleases, when she pleases. And I suspect she has much more to eat than she needs when she’s loose. On the other hand, when she’s in the cage, she never gets (almost) stepped on, which would be a very large draw-back for her.

Now, about Medusa’s diet. I realize that some of y’all are from foreign countries places other than Texas, and so you may not know. In Texas we have BUGS, pretty much all year round, lots of ‘em. I have never wanted to live among pesticides, so we do what we can to keep things clean and try to discourage bugs naturally. Medusa is a huge part of this effort.

I have a life-long, extreme fear of water-bugs. Can’t explain it, don’t have to. The things are CREEPY. Yes, Medusa is creepy as well, but she doesn’t want to get on me, or anywhere near me. I don’t know why water-bugs want to get on a person, they never seem to be happy about it when they do it!?!? But, Medusa is a good girl, she stays out of sight during the day and eats those nasty, horrible, horrible, nasty water-bugs all night long. I’d say I love Medusa ………… if she weren’t so creepy.

Now, go back and click on the gerbil link. We laughed our faces off.

Wow. That’s a lot of pets. I like the sound of Medusa. I could have used her help in a few former homes…

Wow, I am a Texas transplant, so these bugs have been a huge culture shock to me! Perhaps we’ll get a Medusa one day!

You are daring! Love your blog – great theme. Can’t wait to read more!

  6. Jonatha, do you have boys? Ours use rubber band guns for their indoor “small-game” hunting. Haven’t seen a good-sized daddy long leg in months! :)

    Hi Jonatha,

No, I don’t know of a pet that eats spiders, but, Kim C. at Life in a Shoe.com actually paid her children per spider for doin’ ‘em in. http://inashoe.com/?p=1868

Do you know of a pet that eats spiders? I’d love to have one of those. We are in FL – bugs all year as well, but those spiders just really freak me out!

    Hi Faith,
I have to say, I held out for a good while. If my Very Dear Hubby and The Cap’n (eldest Pirate) didn’t do ALL of the maintenance on the reptiles we wouldn’t have ANY.

Hello, just found your blog from Momma Bug’s site. From your pet list, you sound like a woman after my own heart! We have five boys (so far) too, and I’ve been holding out on the reptile/spider category so far, but there have been more than one discussion on the merits of tarantulas between Dad and the boys lately. Not quite enough merits to convince me yet, but I’m certainly looking forward to reading your posts more!

    You are a BRAVE woman!!!

Funny how you can be so comfortable with snakes, spiders, and rodents – but yet you hate the water bugs! Maybe since I am from IL I just don’t understand the TX bugs!
