It would be great to prevent them before you get them. We've dealt with serious infestations by treating our carpet to serious vacuuming followed by leaving a fine layer of 1 part baking soda, 1 part salt, and lemon essential oil. After sprinkling that onto the carpet, I use the broom to work it down into the fibers where you can't tell it is there. I leave that there until the next vacuuming and repeat it for about a month. It always works for me, even after we brought home two kittens with the worst flea infestation I've ever seen...couldn't even imagine how bad it was! I’ll have to try that as one of my dogs is allergic to fleas (or so the vets tells me). It would be great to prevent them before you get them.

We have a cute little dog, Sophie, and I have tried many things to keep the fleas off. I too, hate to use chemicals. But Sophie also has dry, itchy skin and though she has been relatively free of fleas, even if there are just two on her she chews herself raw. So I finally bit the bullet and put Advantage on her, knowing how toxic it is. Now I will try this and pray for the results you have had.
