Congratulations! You have been to to Ship Full O' Pirates over 100 times! Just thought you'd like to know.

This Giveaway is now closed.

Well, Mother’s Day was fun, but I’m ready to get back to normal. Enough with the purple print and the flowery pictures already! I need a little high seas adventure in my life.

So, this week’s giveaway is one of my all-time favorite swash-buckling tales. Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is a beautiful hardcover edition, illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. `

I love this Piratey adventure. I first read it to my Pirates when the oldest 2 were little enough to fit on my lap at the same time. This story is interesting, no matter what age you are. Didn’t R.L. Stevenson have a knack for painting word pictures?

The following poem by R.L. Stevenson is the forward of this edition.

TO THE HESITATING PURCHASER

If sailor tales to sailor tunes,

Storm and adventure, heat and cold.

If schooners, islands, and maroons

And Buccaneers and buried Gold,

And all the old romance, retold

Exactly in the ancient way,

Can please, as me they pleased of old,

The wiser youngsters of to-day:

-So be it, and fall on! If not,

If studious youth no longer crave,

His ancient appetites forgot,

Kingston, or Ballantyne the brave,

Or Cooper of the wood and wave:

So be it, also! And may I

And all my pirates share the grave

Where these and their creations lie!

The Rules

Just for fun, tell about a great book that you’ve read recently, or are currently reading. I hope that you are all reading your Bibles regularly, and if you want to tell about that, that’s fine. No silly governmental regulations here! If, however, you choose to tell about another book, I will not call you a heathen backslider, ‘cuz I know you’re reading your Bible too!

One entry per person, FIVE extra entries if you blog about this giveaway and link to it, a REAL post about this giveaway, not just a word or two as part of a list. If you blog about it, please leave a second comment telling me that you did, and leave your URL so I can find it. (Just to clarify… comment once to enter and tell what books you’re currently reading. Then if you blog about it, comment one more time to tell me you blogged about this giveaway, and leave your URL so I can find it. We’re pretty sharp around here, and we’ll work out which comments count as one entry and which comments count as 5 entries.)

Limited to the continental 48, please. It costs WAY too much to ship to anywhere else.

Enter before 7pm cdt on this Friday, 16 May, 2008.

What I’m Reading

I’ll start it off here. I’m re-reading Passionate Housewives Desperate for God, I need all the reminding I can get in this area! Also, we are reading 1st Samuel, we turn on our Bible on cd and follow along in our Bibles. This is very handy, the cd man doesn’t stumble on the hard names, and he goes at a steady pace. We generally get through 5 chapters in about 20-25 minutes. Our current read-aloud is a very interesting piratey book that I had never heard of before my sweet friend Donna H gave it to us a few weeks ago, thanks Donna! It’s called Blackthorn Winter and was written by Douglas Wilson, published by Veritas Press. We are really enjoying it, well the Pirates and I are. The Princess really doesn’t care that much. Maybe she’s not old enough for it, but I suspect it’s just because she’s so Princess-y, not very Pirate-y. (Although, yesterday she donned a Patrick Henry Tri-Cornered Hat and declared herself to BE a Pirate)( I should let her wear the hat while we read our next chapter, maybe that’ll help, I’ll let you know) Later today, I’ll be reading her The Princess and the Kiss so she’ll have her own turn.

So, to enter the giveaway, leave a comment. Yours doesn’t have to be as much of a book as mine is, but I do enjoy hearing what folks are reading and how they’re likin’ it!

Well, let’s see – the last book I read was “Lies Homeschooling Moms Believe” by Todd Wilson. It was a quick read, but very good. I am rereading Cindy Rushton’s “A Charlotte Mason Primer!” right now. Next on my list to read are “Don’t Make Me Count to Three!” (Ginger Plowman), “The Mom Walk” (Sally Clarkson) and “Keep a Quiet Heart” (Elisabeth Elliot) – these are all new from last week’s homeschool bookfair. I am reading aloud “The Moffats” by Eleanor Estes with the kids – we have had lots of laughs with this one!

I would love to win Treasure Island, especially with Wyeth’s illustrations!

    Thanks for another great giveaway!

Good piratey book: Prisoner’s of the Sea by Kingsley from Lamplighter Publishing. Also, Marriage to a Difficult Man, a biography of Jonathan and Sarah Edwards, we got ours from Vision Forum.

  4. I had no idea that Ballantyne was an older writer! In fact, had never even noticed him in the Treasure Island Book at all! So glad you highlighted that above!

I tend to bounce around in books depending on the mood, but right now I’m mainly reading “By Right of Conquest; or With Cortez in Mexico” by G.H. Henty. It started as a pre-read to see what all the Henty buzz was about, and I’ve been really impressed! He adds an amazing level of historical detail to an already good plot.

I do have ” The Tarantula in My Purse” on my birthday list this year though – your recommendation!

This is my first time to your site. We Seales LOVE pirates. :p That caught my attention first. Then when I saw homeschooling, I booked it over here. I am hoping to start homeschooling my 12 year old daughter this year, IF I can get over being scared and figure out how to do this.
Anywho back to the point. I just finished last night, The Host, by Stephenie Meyer. It took me a moment to get into it. Its not like her other books. But soon it had me captivated. This is her first novel for adults. I love that she can right a page-turning book, without all the smut you usually find in books. I recommend it and don’t be scared by the sci-fi label.

  7. Most recently, I read a book that I don’t think is available yet (it’s printed where my mom works & she asked me to review it) about Vaccine alternatives. It was basic, but a good introduction to vax alternatives. Books that are actually available to other people . . . I haven’t been reading much lately but my girls got a set of books called Forever Stories that goes through the story of salvation (Fall of Lucifer through Heaven) for little kids, they are loving these books, we’re reading through them for the 3rd time (& they got them a little over a month ago) already!

  8. I just finished reading the Deptford Mouse Trilogy by Robin Jarvis last night.

My next book to read is the South Beach Diet Supercharged.

And the Princess and the kiss is a great story.

Anyway. So, I posted about your giveaway here:

How do I enter multiple times? Leave multiple comments? I must admit that kind of makes me feel like a spammer or something – are you sure it’s ok to do that?

I recently read “College in a year”, which has inspired me to go back to school, though I doubt I’ll make it through in a year. =)

My daughter is totally involved in the “Twilight” series by Stephanie Meyer and kept bugging me to read them. So I started on Thursday night about 9pm and by early Sunday afternoon had finished all three. They were pretty good, although fairly sophomoric and had me rolling my eyes and skipping some bits. I do not recommend them for anyone who doesn’t like vampires or werewolves.

I have some other homeschooling books I bought for $1 at the recent homeschool sale. Woo Hoo! So I’ll be reading those. Probably “help for the harried homeschooler” is next or something. We’ll see.

I’m also deeply involved in enjoying some truly fiendish sudoku puzzles.

I’m reading “what your preschooler needs to know” as well as Bob books with the toddler.

My older son (12) has just finished “Tom Sawyer” and LOVED it. =) I’m kind of sad that he doesn’t want me to read to him anymore. He’s a really fast reader so prefers to read by himself.

  11. Michelle says:

Let’s see…I just finished reading Safely Home by Randy Alcorn, a fiction book about the persecuted church in China. A very thought-provoking and moving read, one I would definitely recommend. I just started Ocean Apart by Karen Kingsbury, which seems to be a bit lighter and faster read. My daughter loves The Princess and the Kiss. We are a family that loves to read and we have a lot of great books on our shelves.

  12. Miss Kelly says:

Enter me in the contest! I have a terrible habbit of reading many books at once. Really. I have 20 books going now. I am not seeking help because that would ruin my fun. So I will tell you the title of the book that I am nearest the end in. 7 myths of gun control. It’s a book every woman should read. Especially when raising pirates. Can a pirate be a pirate without canon and side arm?
