The End of the Beginning Giveaway

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed

No, not the beginning of the end.

Remember, these weekly giveaways are to celebrate the beginning of my blog.  But, this weeks giveaway is the last of the weeklies, and the beginning of the monthly giveaways.

This week I’m giving away The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters.  This is a compilation of stories constructed from the real facts as obtained from those on board who survived.  Edited by Logan Marshall.

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.

The Rules!

Leave a comment telling us your favorite Sea Going movie or video series.  It doesn’t have to have a Piratey theme,  just ships and the sea.  I have a whole list of favorites.  Kinda hard to narrow it down.  I really enjoy Master and Commander, it’s all just so very picturesque, all but the bloody battle parts, I turn my head away for those parts, which are considerable.  I also enjoy watching  Horatio Hornblower, he’s just such a nice boy, most of the time.  But, I really couldn’t get through the week without hearing Muppets Treasure Island in the back-ground while I’m on the ‘puter, I love the songs, Cabin-Fever cracks me up every time, and I love Kermit.

One entry per person, and a second entry if you post about it before Thursday.  You know the deal, a real post, not just a word or two as part of a list.

As usual, I can’t afford to ship it outside the continental 48.  That costs more than the book, alot more.

I’ll close the giveaway on Friday, May 30th at 7pm cdt  so, no lolly-gagging!  Look sharp! Enter now!

I’m not too late, am I? I hope not. I can’t believe I have missed two weeks of posts!

Anyway, favourite sea or boat movies…hmmmm. The first one that comes to mind, is Pirates of the Caribbean. I also like Titanic, though I am sure there are many others, I’m just not thinking very well today.

The males of our family like “Victory at Sea”. I have to admit the series is underappreciated in the female realm, and they would rather watch Pride and Prejudice. No sea or pirates in it at all. I think there is a lake in there. A fountain or two also!

Do the Pirates who don’t do anything count? Oh yeah… there are also those veggies in viking gear… not quite the classics, though they do distract the littlest ones during school time…

    Does Goonies count?

  4. Betsy says:

POTC, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Titanic, The Odyssey (does that count?). I would like to read this book!

First time on this site…I am a mom of 4 scurvy boys and pirate lovers. MY favorite movie would also have to be Titanic. I don’t know if this counts but I also loved Blue Lagoon, with Brooke Shields? Anywho, I am enjoying your blog so far!

Pirates of the Carribean, the 3rd one. All around favorite here.

We watched a documentary on the history of the Navy once. . .though my memory is failing me now. It is one of our favorites and we would love to get our hands on it.

How about SMALL ships and sailing? One of our favorites is the BBC (I think) version of “Swallows and Amazons” based on Arthur Ransome’s book of the same title. Four siblings spend the summer at a house in England’s lake counties and adventure being pirates on their own sailboat. Full of adventure and pretending. A lovely picture of simple fun and entertaining plot. With British accents. Just about anything is better with a British accent!

Other than the ones already named, I can’t think of one that’s predominantly at sea, but here are some with boat scenes in them that are favorites with us:

Swiss Family Robinson (Does the island count as “at sea” or does that usually mean on ship?)

    The Scarlet Pimpernel

    Star Trek Generations

Hi Nancy, thanks for the belated birthday sentiments for the Pirates.

Hi Momma Bug, I’ve never seen (or read) Persuasion, however, I understand there is a Naval aspect. So, I’ll trust you on that one. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea does, of course, fill th’ bill.

  11. Momma Bug says:

Hmmm. I like Persuasion. (you know, Jane Austin?)
    Does that count?
My brain is like putty today!

How ’bout 20,000 leagues under the sea!!
    That HAS to count!

    Hi Mother Hen!

I meant to send birthday greetings to your little (or not so little) mates last week, but it was a really crazy week around here! So, here’s a belated birthday wish for them – that their waters would be smooth for another year, and if they do run into rough waters, that their eyes would stay fixed on the Admiral, Who will keep their ship afloat and bring them into smooth waters.

As for seafaring movies, yes, “Master and Commander” is a great one (I’m still trying to catch all the words they say – that fast British is a little hard for me to follow – but every time I watch I catch a little more!), but we also really like the Pirates of the Caribbean series (well, those of us old enough to be allowed to watch it) – Captain Jack Sparrow is definitely a favorite pirate around here.

I love this giveaway – it sounds so interesting, and I know several in my house that would love to delve into it (me included!).

    Thanks,
    Nancy

    Well,

This is my first time to post on this site. I actually came acrosss your website from clicking on —well, not sure how. I starting hitting links. I think I was on biblicalwomanhood.com.

Anyway, this weekend we were out of town and happened to watch the TITANIC on TV. It was the first time my kids had seen it. They were asking questions the whole time!!! You know how they do–I was constantly saying, “Watch the movie. It will tell you” and “Quit talking you; cannot hear if you are talking.”

We finally were able to watch the whole movie, but all kids were very intent. There are 5 of them 6, 7, 8, 10, and 12 years old. I think they would enjoy this book.

Thanks for letting us in on this.

I look forward to coming back often.
