We have tile floors and children …. in the same house. So that means that most of my dishes are plastic. I buy them from the restaurant supply store. They’re very good quality plastic dishes for a very reasonable price.
But when the dishwasher gets hold of them, well, it leaves them all wet. This takes forever to empty because of all the drying …… by hand. That means that Billy Bones will be in there forever, just emptying the dishwasher, holding up the rest of the Galley Swabbing festivities.
As I mentioned before, we have assigned jobs, and we don’t rotate them. You get the job I give and you WILL get good at it before you get re-assigned. That makes it easier to hold ‘em accountable for their work. No slackin’ off when it’s your turn, hoping to heap the blame on another Pirate.
So, for Billy Bones, that means that after supper he’s gonna be puttin’ away the cleans before the rest of us clean the dirties.
Imagine his relief when we got a new dishwasher that doesn’t leave the dishes wet. I really don’t know if it’s the fact that the dishwasher is new (and possibly better, but certainly newer) or if it has more to do with the fact that I actually read the owners manual and the instructions, and then proceeded to follow them? It’s a mystery, huh?
Well, here’s what I learned. Since we have hard HARD water, we should fill the detergent cups all the way up ALL THE WAY UP! And we should use the LIQUID rinse agent. I’ve been using the squirrelly little basket thingies. Those only work for the first week.
Before the new machine and the new system of using the correct amounts of the correct products, it would take Billy Bones half an hour to do the job, at least! Now it’s done in under 10 minutes. That’s freedom! All the Pirates would like to be re-assigned to that job now!

You’re so right- a rinse agent does make such a difference!
I’ve found that I can use white vinegar (just pour it in like the rinse agent), instead of a commercial rinse agent, and it works just fine.

I’ve heard that a little vinegar (in the rinse agent portal on your dishwasher’s door) works just the same as the commercial rinse agents. I use vinegar but don’t really have a good basis for comparison, as we just never bought rinse agents–too expensive, IMHO.
Oh my, we have the same cups … you’re right about the tile floors! Out here in CA we have a restaurant supply store called Smart and Final that sells them, and all kinds of other restaurant grade kitchen equipment. I’m gonna have to try the rinse agent idea too!
