If you live here long enough, you will have allergies. That’s what my allergist tells me and it’s what I have observed, with very few exceptions.
I suffer horribly. Wait. Let’s change that to the past tense. I used to suffer horribly. That is, until I got fed up with getting sinus infections, one after the other, all autumn and winter long. Ugh! Yuk! I hate it!
I have known about the cure for some time now. I just am that stubborn. And the cure is a little more involved than popping a little red pill twice a day. But, last autumn, I finally decided to get on board and commit myself to the cure.
I am not going to dole out advice here. I am just gonna tell you what worked for me. Actually, I’m not even gonna tell you. I’ll just give you a little vid to watch, then I’ll tell you where to get the supplies.
You can buy these pots at the health food store. They even have ‘em at Walgreens now. I paid $15 for mine. The salt I use is just a rounded ¼ teaspoon of sea salt.
If you have small children, buy the plastic pot. The ceramic ones shatter very nicely in the sink.
I used mine faithfully, all autumn and didn’t have any sinus trouble, didn’t even need a tissue once. Then I got over-confident and laid off for a few days in April and promptly came down with a sinus infection. Stubborn lady that I am, I didn’t go to the doctor for it, but I did immediately start using my neti pot twice a day, and that cleared it right up.
The Pirates also have allergies. But when I suggested the neti pot you’d think I’d told them to walk the plank. I must say, the effect is somewhat the same. Of course, with one you end up in Davy Jones’ locker, and the other can save you from intense facial pain. Either way you’re gonna have salt-water up yer nose.

Hi Mother Hen,
Have been enjoying your Blog for a couple of months now, but just haven’t commented yet. I am a wife of 25 years, a mother, a grandmother and a registered nurse (part time on that last one). This is a great solution to prevent infection, but did you know that salt also kills many different types of bacteria? So, it’s a scientifically proven solution for the health of our sinuses! It might burn a little, but you bet it beats a sinus headache anyday. I don’t know if you live in Texas, but I do, and I also struggle with allergies every spring and fall. Thanks for your encouraging and informative blog!

Hi Katie, I’ve had this happen too. I found it to be caused by either too much salt, not enough salt, or there is already a sinus infection present. In the case of the latter, you just have to struggle through.
I tried this and it burned so bad! Maybe I need to keep trying it. Thanks for the tip!
looks better than my alternative – allergy shots!
Well you caught my attention. I have such bad allergies. I sneezed and blew my nose, all day yesterday, and have an irritated nose today because of it. I don’t have the netty pot, but I do have a sinus irrigation thing. My sister swears by her, much the way you do. I need to stop being stubborn and just do it. Thanks for the post.
I think this is such a neat idea, but I could not help snorting with laughter at the video. Something about it looked like an old parlor trick to me! LOL!
Moseyed over from Rocks in my Dryer…Love you site! I’ve got five pirates of my own, but seven princesses as well! ;o)

Yes, I totally get the thing about interruptions making us forget stuff we were doing. Even important stuff like commenting on my blog. But, there, now you’ve done it and we can be chicken buddies!
I love this! I, too, have allergies and actually use the baby bulb nose sucker filled with salt water to flush out the sinuses!
Thanks for stopping by the Hen House. I’ve actually checked out your blog before. Sometimes I lurk before I comment. Or get interuppted by a chickie and forget what I was doing!
That’s totally funny looking. I’d have a hard time doing it in my house… they’d all gather around to see Mama do this trick, and we’d all end up laughing so hard, I’d end up with it all in my sinuses…
But I’ll keep it in mind, just in case I can sneak it at night…
My husband does a similar flush with just a cup of water. Yes, it does work great! I think the neti pot would make the whole operation easier. Have a great week!
