August Giveaway

   Posted by: MotherHen   in Books, Fun Pirate Stuff, Giveaways, Homeschooling

Have I mentioned that I love books?  I have such a great book for you.   I started looking at it to see if I wanted to read it to the children and ended up just reading it to myself.  Not that it wasn’t a good one for the children, it so is.  But, I just couldn’t put it down.

If you’re not familiar with this true story, click on the picture and that’ll take you to Vision Forum where you can read a better description than I could write.  Below the description they have some products that you may find to be a good accompaniment to the book and they’re right on, but I want to add one to the list.

It’s a rubberband 6-shooter.  These are sturdy, fun, reasonably safe guns.  (Do not shoot it at the face!  That would smart!)

And since the book and the gun go together so well, I’ll give them both to one of you.

The Rules

Y’all know I can’t stand it when the entries just say, “Enter me!”  Do y’all find that to be greedy, bad manners, like I do?

It’s a read aloud theme.

This time tell me about  your favorite book you have read aloud to your children.  If you don’t have children you may tell me what you would like to read aloud to your future children or other children in your life.  Or if you’d prefer, you may tell about a book that you remember being read to you as a child.  Just leave a comment telling about your book.  Be sure to leave your email so I can tell you if you win.

Shipping Restrictions

Sorry, but shipping costs being ridiculously high, I will only pay to ship in the contiguous 48.  If you are from elsewhere, you may enter, but you will have to pay the shipping if you win.  So, all you elsewhere readers, please don’t enter unless you agree to pay shipping.  For the rest of you who do reside in the contiguous 48, rest assured I will pay to ship to you.

Exclusions

This is not a forum for a discussion of toy guns.  If you would like to enter and would not like to receive the toy gun, that’s fine, just state this in your comment.  But be aware, I will delete any and all comments with disparaging or argumentative remarks about toy guns.  And I’m a quick draw on the delete button, I won’t even read your argument, so don’t waste your time.  My blog, my rules.  I am very much in favor of toy guns and do not wish to argue with you on my blog.  If you just want to argue or discuss views on this topic, get your own blog.  But, if this is you, you may not enjoy the book either, I’m just sayin’.

Read Alouds

Whew!  Got my feathers all ruffled for a minute there.  Back to our theme.  Read alouds.  I love to read to my children.  My fondest memories of Motherhood center around wiggly little Pirates sitting stock still, completely absorbed in listening to me read Robin Hood or Treasure Island or Robinson Crusoe or… I continue to add to the list.

When Mother Reads Aloud

    When Mother reads aloud, the past
    Seems real as every day;
    I hear the tramp of armies vast,
    I see the spears and lances cast,
    I join the thrilling fray;
    Brave knights and ladies fair and proud
    I meet when Mother reads aloud.

    When Mother reads aloud, far lands
    Seem very near and true;
    I cross the deserts’ gleaming sands,
    Or hunt the jungle’s prowling bands,
    Or sail the ocean blue.
    Far heights, whose peaks the cold mists shroud,
    I scale, when Mother reads aloud.

    When Mother reads aloud, I long
    For noble deeds to do…
    To help the right, redress the wrong;
    It seems so easy to be strong,
    So simple to be true.
    Oh, thick and fast the visions crowd
    My eyes, when Mother reads aloud.

Yea! Giveaways!

My favorite book to read out loud to the big kids was the first Harry Potter book.

For the little ones it’s the There is a Monster at the End of this Book. That was also my favorite as a child.

Frank Peretti wrote some great books for kids called Cooper Kids Adventures. They are kind of Indiana Jones-ish but Christian all the way!
My kids are one the edge of their seat during these stories.

Mother Hen got her feathers all ruffled? Was that an intentional pun?
My all time favorite read-alouds are the Chronicles of Narnia. I love books with several layers of meaning, so that all ages can enjoy and learn from them.

I love your site. I found it while doing a search on Google Blog Search. I love to read as well, and hope to instill that in my children. One of my favorite books that we have read together is Stuart Little. Everyday is a new adventure with Stuart. Thank you so much for your generosity. I have added your blog to my favorites.

My kids are still somewhat youngish so the book would probably be for me and hubby for a while the gun may be a bit much for the youngest too but the older boy would love it!! They love Cloudy with a chance of meatballs and I did too when I was a kid. It’s just so far fetched it’s fun! I’m going to go through your comments over the next few days for some read aloud ideas!!
Thanks for the giveaway!!

I read to my daughter, but we haven’t established a favorite yet, so I’ll tell you my childhood favorite. My grandmother read me ‘Peter Pan and Wendy’ when I was a child, and I can still vividly recall afteroons lying on my bed and listening to her read her way through the book. She read a chapter or so each afternoon and I couldn’t wait for the next installment! I still have that book and I can’t wait to make it a treasured memory for my daughter too.

This is a hard one as we have so many favorite books! The whole family really enjoys the Patricia St. John books- our favorite so far has been Star of Light. All my children love to read, but my son is who I am entering this for- he is a big history buff. He loves his guns too! Thank you for your generosity!

WE LOVE GUNS!
;-)

We also love reading aloud, although I confess that I don’t gather the children NEARLY enough to do it. So sad. September’s on it’s way! (Y’gotta have a goal!)

Right now we’re reading Duncan’s War, because we (I) really, really like “doing voices”, and the challenge of a Scottish brogue has been VERY fun. Our favorite bedtime read-aloud for the little ones is “If You Were My Bunny”, because it has lullabies that you sing as you read. The girls already have copies in their hope chests for their own children someday.

Good contest. Whyyyyy do we hafta wait sooo lonnnng, though??

The book sounds wonderful and the gun sounds fun :) I loved have The Little Prince read to me when I was a little girl. Maybe that’s why I was always searching for Prince Charming and the man of my dreams? *Thanks* for the giveaway!

I LOVE your blog!!! I just wanted to tell you that you inspire me to be more light-hearted and have fun and enjoy my children!

This contest is GREAT! I am adding books to my read aloud list right now! I love the story of Sargeant York and will probably have to buy the book (and GUN :)) for my boys if we don’t win! So thank you for bringing them to my attention! :)

We have several favorites books- the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, the Narnia Chronicles, Pippi Longstocking, the Terrestria Chronicles by Ed Dunlop, Rascal by Sterling North, Peter Pan, Robert Louis Stevenson’s poetry and books, Swiss Family Robinson, ALL Thornton Burgess’ books….. I could go on and on!

Thanks again for the contest!

Yay! Books are my favorite! We would particularly love to have this one because we visited a war museum on our vacation this summer where Sgt. York’s actual gun was on display. My husband was so excited he took a picture of it!

We are reading chapter books for family read-alouds now. Our favorite has been “Farmer Boy” by Laura Ingalls Wilder. My 9yo still loves picture books, too, and often reads his “Treasury of Curious George” by Margaret and H.A. Rey. A must have book for every family of pirates is “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long. It is beautifully illustrated and a hilarious read-aloud, especially when using your best pirate voice! Aargh, matey!

I read a book called Molly Bannaky by Alice McGill last week to my boys. It is a big picture book with great paintings on each page and tells the true story of a young English dairymaid who was sent to the colonies as an indentured servant as punishment for her cow kicking over the milk when she sneezed. I don’t want to spoil it but it is one incredible life she lived here. Oh, and I used to not believe in toy guns but that was before I had a boy. Now I know there is no point in not having toy guns as they will turn everything from their finger to Legos to tampon applicators into guns anyways, so what’s the point? I took one look at that great gun and thought my boys will shoot each other’s eyes out but they will love it to pieces! Plus the book sounds really good!

We read aloud all the time, but I’ll share a beautiful memory of a read aloud.

I attended a small town public school in OR. My third grade teacher read “The Chronicles of Narnia” aloud to us for fifteen minutes a day after lunch recess. I remember clearly that on at least one afternoon, the true Gospel was shared with the class as they asked questions about that great book.

I found your blog through Kim over at Life in a Shoe. I’m new to the blog world and you ladies are getting me hooked :)

I love the poem that you posted “When Mother Reads Aloud”; I hadn’t heard that one before, thanks for sharing.
We have had the habit of reading aloud to our boys since they were tiny. We have so so many favorites! When I was a young girl I loved The Cricket in Times Square, so it was fun to share that one with them.

The boys really love history. My youngest picked up a book at the library…primarily because it had Japanese bomber planes on the cover. It was Under the Blood Red Sun by Graham Salisbury. Having never heard of the book, I agreed to read it to them as long as I could stay a chapter ahead to preview the content. (reading ahead is normally frowned upon by the boys :) It turned out to be a family favorite! The book tells the story of a Japanese American boy in Hawaii and how his family was affected by the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the aftermath. We were sad when the story ended… and then delighted when we found a sequel named House of the Red Fish! We’re still hoping for a 3rd because there are loose ends left untied! :)

Our current read is Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Gray. We are loving it too!

Thanks for offering this Sargeant York giveaway which has reminded me of a lot of special times with my kids. Sometimes in the midst of the daily grind I forget!!!! God Bless.

I loved it when my mom read the Little House books to me when I was little. She also read the Blue and the Gray series by Joseph Altsheler which everyone loved.
I don’t have children, but Caddie Woodlawn, the Little House books and many others will be read-alouds when I do.

Ooh, it’s hard to pick a favorite, but I think our best series in recent years was the Wilderking trilogy by Jonathan Rogers. Loosely based on the early life of King David, these were fabulously entertaining for our whole family.

Designated Reader Warning: Be prepared to make up tunes to the character’s ballads on the fly! That can sometimes be as interesting as the lyrics themselves!

We have had lots of favourite read-alouds throughout the years. We absolutley loved the three books in the My Father’s Dragon series by Ruth Stiles Gannett. (And yes, you must read all three. The first two books end on cliffhangers.) We have also enjoyed the Boxcar Children and more recently, Swallows and Amazons. This summer, I have been reading The Tale of Despereaux aloud. It has lots of opportunities for making use of different reading voices.

We really enjoyed reading Teddy’s Button and Titus, Comrade of the Cross published by Lamplighter. For a little older children, you can’t beat Ben Hur. The Little Pilgrims Progess by Helen Taylor was another family favorite. My children read the Little Pilgrims Progress as a reader too.

We’ve always loved “The Napping House” - even though it’s a cardboard book for the toddlers, it still makes my oldest laugh. It’s coming apart now though… it’s got packing tape holding it together!

These other books posted sound great too! I’ll have to check them out soon.

When my little girl was 18-24 months, I read her some Big Blue Whale books. She really took to them, and I could tell she was learning from them, because she tried to say ‘us’ one time and ended up with a long U sound. It was so cute and unexpected.

Since I have three boys at my house -we’re all about guns! Even my two girls like ‘em! As for books, we love those, too! We have enjoyed Heidi, Moby Dick, Curious George, Stuart Little, and anything Seuss. I try to read him as fast as I can (its good for my brain!) and the kids love the rhymes. Regarding Sargeant York, my husband’s father knew him…interesting story. Thanks for the recommendation. I came over from moneysavingmom.

Our daughter is only 4 months old, so she doesn’t quite get it when we try to read to her. But that doesn’t stop me! I love sitting with her in the afternoons and going through the old Spot books. Y’know…the ones with all the flip covers and stuff. Half the time she’s staring at everything but the book, but hey…I enjoy it!

Night of the Moonjellies

This is a book that we read while doing Five in a Row while my oldest (then an only child) was 4 years old. We acted it out later in the week by making homemade moonjellies out of sandwich bags and glow-in-the-dark paint and floating them in our pool. We made a chef’s hat for her and a menu to go along with our made-up resturant we called S&D’s. Items on the menu were similar to those in the book and Sarah served Daddy out by the pool(our beach)and collected his money for th items he ordered. Ah, the memories….

My favorite book to read aloud to my kids (ages 4 & 7) is “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” Last summer we read “The Lion the With and the Wardrobe.” They wouldn’t sit still for book #2, so I skipped to #3 since it’s my personal favorite. Hopefully we’ll finish it soon, I’ve been sporadic about reading out loud lately.

My kids are still so young I have only attempted short books with them. My almost 4 year old loves Where the Wild Things Are, Tikki Tikki Tembo, and Corduroy.
I look forward to reading longer books to them in the future, like Charlotte’s Web (I think my mom read that to me), Stewart Little, and Treasure Island.

I think this is a great prize pack! I wouldn’t have even thought of any potential naysaysers!

My mother tells me that one of my favorite books as a child was The Cow Who Fell in the Canal. I always enjoy reading Charlotte’s Web aloud to children. I read constantly to my children. As a mother,teacher, and librarian, I have read many, many books to many, many children.

This is an old-fashioned poem, but it expresses the value of reading to your children. I hope you enjoy it, if you have not seen it before! ( It is especially appropriate since you like the pirate theme!)

THE READING MOTHER
I had a mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea,
Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth,
“Blackbirds” stowed in the hold beneath

I had a Mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.

I had a Mother who read me tales
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness blent with his final breath.

I had a Mother who read me the things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings-
Stories that stir with an upward touch,
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be-
I had a Mother who read to me.

We are huge fans of snuggling up on the couch and settling in for a good read. Our favorites (so many to choose from!) have been The Secret Seven, The Little House on the Prairie series (especially Farmer Boy,) The Wind in the Willows…..sigh…

Another favorite may not count. We love to take road trips as a family and listen to books on cd. We have loved the Narnia series, Peter and the Starcatchers, Seabiscuit, Anne of Green Gables, and more. Oh! The Story of the World books! We love reading them on the couch and listening to them on trips.

I don’t have many childhood memories, but I remember watching my father’s mouth as he read to my sister and I. I couldn’t tell you what he read, but I was mesmerized by his voice.
