Oh the list is long so I'll just name a few good ones:

Where the Wild things are
Mr. Brown can Moo
Bear snores on
the jester lost his jingle

Harry potter for the older children and now the spiderwick chronicles

We are huge fans of snuggling up on the couch and settling in for a good read. Our favorites (so many to choose from!) have been The Secret Seven, The Little House on the Prairie series (especially Farmer Boy,) The Wind in the Willows.....sigh...

Another favorite may not count. We love to take road trips as a family and listen to books on cd. We have loved the Narnia series, Peter and the Starcatchers, Seabiscuit, Anne of Green Gables, and more. Oh! The Story of the World books! We love reading them on the couch and listening to them on trips.

I don't have many childhood memories, but I remember watching my father's mouth as he read to my sister and I. I couldn't tell you what he read, but I was mesmerized by his voice.

My mother tells me that one of my favorite books as a child was The Cow Who Fell in the Canal. I always enjoy reading Charlotte's Web aloud to children. I read constantly to my children. As a mother,teacher, and librarian, I have read many, many books to many, many children.

This is an old-fashioned poem, but it expresses the value of reading to your children. I hope you enjoy it, if you have not seen it before! ( It is especially appropriate since you like the pirate theme!)

THE READING MOTHER
I had a mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea,
Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth,
"Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath

I had a Mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.

I had a Mother who read me tales
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness blent with his final breath.

I had a Mother who read me the things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings-
Stories that stir with an upward touch,
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!

You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be-
I had a Mother who read to me.

My kids are still so young I have only attempted short books with them. My almost 4 year old loves Where the Wild Things Are, Tikki Tikki Tembo, and Corduroy.
I look forward to reading longer books to them in the future, like Charlotte's Web (I think my mom read that to me), Stewart Little, and Treasure Island.

I think this is a great prize pack! I wouldn't have even thought of any potential naysaysers!

My favorite book to read aloud to my kids (ages 4 & 7) is "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader." Last summer we read "The Lion the With and the Wardrobe." They wouldn't sit still for book #2, so I skipped to #3 since it's my personal favorite. Hopefully we'll finish it soon, I've been sporadic about reading out loud lately.
