Congratulations! You have been to to Ship Full O' Pirates over 100 times! Just thought you'd like to know.
Do you have a copy of The Book of Virtues? You know the one. William Bennett. Over 800 pages.
This book is such a gem. If you have (almost) no money for books, buy a Bible. If you have a few more dollars, buy The Book of Virtues. Really, I just saw it on amazon for 77 cents plus shipping. So, it won’t put your budget out of whack.
The value of this book is huge. I have owned ours since The Cap’n was tiny. Well, he never was tiny, but let’s say since he was a baby. I haven’t used it as much as I should have. This one deserves to be left on the coffee table ALL the time.
I do read it a lot. We have our favorite stories. The Bell of Atri is such a great story. And who can resist Diamonds and Toads? Which sounds like a boys only story, but really it’s more of a girl story. But, often I pick up this book and just choose something at random. Today was such a day.

The children were uncommonly rowdy right before supper, so story time was rather early this evening. They just needed to sit down, and I didn’t have time to be choosy. So I just opened it and started reading. After the first short story they had calmed down a bit, so I had a sec to flip pages and during that little lightning flash moment I found this gem of a poem. The only source listed was McGuffey’s Primer.
Work while you work,
Play while you play;
One thing each time,
That is the way.
All that you do,
Do with your might;
Things done by halves
Are not done right.

This is great! Thanks for sharing it…definitely will be used for copywork (for me too!)
I also own the Book of Virtue. I read something to the Chickies each day at snack time in the afternoon. (we read the bible during breakfast and a story of their choosing at bedtime). This is one of the best books that I have ever (literally) stumbled across.
Hmmm… maybe this will be copywork this week!
This is completely unrelated to your post, but when I saw it, I couldn’t help but think of you. http://booksformoms.blogspot.com/2008/08/guide-to-pirate-parenting.html
And yes, we do own the Book of Virtues. I had it in our collection, we never read it (gasp!) so I donated it (double gasp!), came across a better copy than the one we had at a library booksale, where I was able to purchase it for 10 cents, and now it is happily back on our shelf again. We have read a bit out of it. I only wish I would take the time to read more to the kids from it. It is one of the best books we own, but the least used, given all of the other stuff we take on for school.
