Pardon our mess.
Those of you with eyes will already have noticed that I have changed my template. I love the new look, don’t you?
Please bear with us while we get everything squared away and all prettied-up. Yes, it’s a word, in Texas anyway. It means lookin’ good, color co-ordinated, you know, the purse matching the shoes and all that.
Anyway, what was I gonna say? Oh yeah, this month’s giveaways. Hey, looky there, I said a plural. Aw well, how ’bout one a week in October? Does that sound good? Karen? Any thoughts?
Now the real fun. I get to write some rules. It’s what I live for.
The Rules:
- You may enter each giveaway. Once.
- Ok, twice, but the second one only if you blog about it and link to me and send huge traffic my way. (ok, huge traffic optional, but try, huh?)
- This giveaway is only open to folks in the continental 48, or as Mr. O. would say, 58. The thing is, shipping is a real bear, and it’s my dime, I have no sponsors. Perry, is there anything you can do about that?
- You know it’s comin’. Here it is. None of that, “Enter me!” baloney. This time we are gonna tell our “FAVORITE FALL FAMILY FUN!” What does your family do in the fall that is fun? Traditional or spontaneous, normal or weird (the Bible calls it peculiar), indoors or out, whatever. If your family enjoys it in the Autumn, let’s hear about it.
- I could go on and on, but in addition to enjoying the making of rules, I also enjoy not having too many rules which would tend to stomp out all the fun. Peculiar, eh?
- This giveaway is now closed.
And to kick things off, I will tell you that my family enjoys a costume party at the end of October. While we don’t participate in the “Trick or Treat” holiday, our street is one of those that is on the news every year on the 31st because of some of our neighbors. There is loud, scary music, a hoard of beggars tramping through, and cars everywhere. So, we have our own celebration to counter what we would otherwise see and hear. We play our own music and games. But the very most fun is the costumes. I don’t get too involved here, as I have found that the children make better costumes and have more fun when I just limit my involvement to ooohing and aaaahing.
Oh, hey! Would y’all like to know what I’m giving away? What a scatter-brain. I was about to publish. HA HA HA! My brain is shortin’ out today.
Week #1
You may start entering today, but next week is what I’m talkin’ about. So, the gift for week #1 is a copy of the book BELOVED BRIDE: The Letters of Stonewall Jackson to His Wife by Bill Potter.
Closing entries on Friday, October 10th. I’ll chose a winner on Saturday, October 11th. I’ll also post the next week’s giveaway at that time.

As we are new to this part of the country, apple picking is our new Fall favorite. We picked well over 100 lbs of apples this year and canned apple sauce, apple pie filling, and lots of apple butter. The children also enjoy picking walnuts by the feed sack full and selling them to the walnut hullers.
We go to a nearby park and rake the leaves. We then take turns jumping into them. There are also ducks there so we bring bread to feed them and hot chocolate for us!
We love fall and we love to go to bonfires, roast hot dogs, and make s’mores. And always always, my hubby burns the marshmallows!
We do a lot of crafts, my 5 kid’s love to do them, in the fall one of our favorites is to get the large leaves, with the big veins, use a thin paper and a box of crayons or colored pencils. Lay the leaf vein side up, put the paper on top and use the crayons or colored pencils to do rubbings. They make beautiful designs If you are inclined you may want to use then for Christmas gifts, pit them in some cheap frames and make your own colorful borders. Would make a nice gift.
There isn’t much “fall” in Texas, but we love to open the windows! When the weather starts to cool down, you know 85 instead of 100, we open all the windows and enjoy the “cooler” weather. Now I’m a Texas girl so 85 is cool to me!
Our favorite thing is our neighborhood pumpkin carving party. It is a new tradition but I know the kids are really looking forward to getting messy in the driveway with all their friends. Its so easy! Set up tables. Everyone brings their own pumpkins and something (food or drink) to share. Drag out the trash cans. There you have it! A tradition is born!
Our favorite family fun thing is tailgating for University of Michigan football games!!! Dress the kids up in maize and blue, bring the tents, tables, chairs, grills, games, coolers, drinks (everything from water, juice, beer and champagne!), and breakfast AND lunch. Invite everyone we know, sit back, and relax until gametime!
We just love celebrating the season by enjoying being together as a family and being thankful for what we have and each other.
Growing up, our favorite family fun thing to do was to gather all the leaves in our yard and stuff those big orange garbage bags with pumpkins on them. There would be a lot of jumping into piles of leaves in the process.
I am sorry to admit that we have *no* fall traditions at all.
Thanksgiving – yeah, we do that one. Although I’m English I have thoroughly adopted this American tradition because I LOVE how it starts the usual “gimme” season with a huge dose of gratitude. I think because we emphasize that gratitude the children don’t go into December thinking TOO much about themselves. =)
Um. Other that that, that’s about it really. We like to drink hot chocolate. And read books. But we do that pretty much all year round so it doesn’t count.
Sorry to be so boring. I read everyone else’s entry avidly, though, looking for ideas. =D
Hello, Fall is my favorite time of year. One weekend during the fall, we take a trip to a state park in a surrounding state. We rent a cabin and enjoy some quality family time! We hike, grill outdoors, fish and play family games in the evening by the fireplace. Thanks, Cindi
The end of October brings Reformation Day… which I love to celebrate instead of Halloween (although I do love costumes and candy).
Personally, my favorite thing to do in the fall with my family is, well… Thanksgiving. I love gathering together with my Dad’s side of the family. When I was a kid, we use to rake up leaves and dive into them while all the ladies worked in the kitchen. Now my parents live in a condo and we rent a gathering room (free) in their complex for the holiday… so no trees, no leaves.. but still so much fun!
We love to go for a drive and see all the fall color. My kids are fond of daddy and mommy raking leaves while they jump in and fling them all over the place. My favorite smell of fall is burning leaves. I’m not sure if that’s odd or not but I really LOVE it!!
In the Month of October, here in NY the Leaves become this quilted blanked of colors, orange , amber, yellow, red…. One of my favorite things to do in the area that I live in is to visit our state park that is about 15 minutes from my home here is the linkhttp://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=125 They have a lookout that over looks our county…. every year we take a walk on the Indian trail pick up leaves bring them home for wax paper stain glass windows here is another linkhttp://crafts.kaboose.com/melted-crayon-stained-glass-window.html… well any way then we come home for some hot chocolate….. I love this season!!!!
In the Fall we pick up stuff to make carmel and dip apples.
Of course you have to do this with candles lit, and some favorite fall ambiance music on.
Martinelli’s (sparkling cider) is another fall-time favorite – we enjoy this with pop corn, Thanksgiving, and Christmas tree decorating.
My grandparents-in-law were friends with the Martinellis family, and my Mom-in-love has one of the old cast iron apple corer/peelers from the Martinelli’s factory.
We also love to take walks in which we can marvel at the beauty of God’s creation in it’s changing splender!
Well we bought a house last year with 5 HUGE trees in the not very huge front yard. We didn’t do it then because I was 7 months pregnant, but growing up my fave thing was raking up piles and jumping into them. And as of the 2nd week of August, the trees have started the journey to make that possible. Now we just have to keep the 9 month old from eating them :- D
Our favorite fall activity is our thankfulness chart. Starting in October I put up a large sheet of paper where we all right things we are thankful for. All of our visitors also participate. We leave it up until the end of the year.
Our favorite thing to do in the fall is have a picnic at the zoo. My bday is in the month of Oct so we go to the zoo as a family for that day. My daughter and son love the animals and I do too. It is our family activity and then my hubby takes me out in the evening for a date night, just the two of us.
