October Giveaways – Week 2

   Posted by: MotherHen   in Extra-Categorical

You’re gonna love this weeks giveaway.  It’s a G.A. Henty  cd audio book, The Cat of Bubastes.  This story was my introduction to G. A. Henty (several years ago).  We love G.A. Henty’s historical fiction.

This giveaway is only a week long.  The rules are the same as last week.

The Rules:

  1. You may enter each giveaway.  Once.
  2. Ok, twice, but the second one only if you blog about it and link to me and send huge traffic my way. (ok, huge traffic optional, but try, huh?)
  3. This giveaway is only open to folks in the continental 48.  The thing is, shipping is a real bear, and it’s my dime, I have no sponsors.  Perry, is there anything you can do about that?
  4. You know it’s comin’.  Here it is.  None of that, “Enter me!” baloney.  This time we are gonna tell our “FAVORITE FALL FAMILY FUN!”  What does your family do in the fall that is fun?  Traditional or spontaneous, normal or weird (the Bible calls it peculiar), indoors or out, whatever.  If your family enjoys it in the Autumn, let’s hear about it.
  5. I could go on and on, but in addition to enjoying the making of rules, I also enjoy not having too many rules which would tend to stomp out all the fun.  Peculiar, eh?

I’ll announce the winner on Saturday.

One Saturday in October we go out to the pumpkin farm for the day and pick out our pumpkins, some apples and just have fun. Then we come home and make homemade applesauce and caramel apples! It’s tons of fun and we all look forward to the day every year.

We had friends that held a family costume party every year. (they still do, we just moved too far away :( Anyway, we had such fun planning and making our costumes. We would have a family theme. One year my dh and I were M&M packages …the kids were individual M&M’s. Another year we were all LEGO blocks. It was also fun to see what our friends would come up with for their costumes.

We love fall here. We like to read Miss Hickory, have hot cocoa for the first time, make acorn wreaths, and read fall poems. We make “stained glass” leaf pictures with colored leaves and wax paper. Since it is getting dark earlier we enjoy playing in the dark with flashlights or glow sticks. We watch the squirrels and make acorns whistle. We have a big bonfire and invite church friends over for hot chocolate and marshmallows. Fall is our favorite time of the year.

Last weekend we cleaned up our yard and put the garden to bed for the year. It feels so good to have that done. We also like to go to a local state park and just walk and the kids play. Of course, the kids love the pumpkin patches. And they all like to dress up for the Fall Festival at church.

Almost every September for the last 9 years or so, we have had a hot dog roast at our house. We have a huge bonfire, and a little one for roasting, people bring a dish to pass and we cook hot dogs on sticks and enjoy each other’s company while the kids play football or hide and seek in the dark. It’s my son’s favorite way to celebrate his birthday, and has become quite a tradition for our family and our friends.

Hello! Almost every fall, our family heads to a different state park to spend a few days there in a cabin. We hike, fish, grill outdoors and make
s’mores around a fire. At night, we play games at the kitchen table and enjoy the cabin’s fireplace. Many thanks, Cindi

We go to our local university’s homecoming float parade, taking homemade candy apples along to munch on. This is so much fun for all of us!

Thanks!

We go apple picking at least once and make homemade applesauce. We go to the Fall Havest festival and pick out our pumpkin family. And finally for Daddy’s Birthday each year we go to the Renaissance Festival.

One on my favorite things to do in the fall ( which the list is to long ) is just go walking down the road … it is a seasonal road that not much traffic goes down… you feel as though you have gone down one of Ann of Green gables descriptive lanes… which the name is not coming to me…. but I think you understand….. my favorite sounds are crunchy leaves , geese honking and getting ready to go south…. the ooooo and ahhhs of the children when they look at the creation that God has given us.

We have loved Jim Weiss for years. This giveaway would be perfect for our next road trip. We like to camp in the fall (before it gets too cold).

Fall is my family’s favorite season. We do a lot of special cooking this time of year. Yummy soups and chili’s.
We also love the leaves changing in our area and have plent to rake up from our wooded yard.
Hayrides, firepit parties, cooking out on the fire and wearing jeans and hoodies to do it all.
LOVE IT! Thank you Lord for fall!

My parents are immigrants from Italy, and they still live like they are on a farm in Italy. They have grape vines all over their yard. Every year, we make home made foods/drink with all of the grapes. This happens in the fall, which is harvesting time. We make Grape Pies, Grape Juice, Grape Jelly, and Wine (for the adults, of course). It is a fall tradition that has been in my family for generations. I hope to continue these traditions. Thanks for the opportunity!

Oh, man! We wanted to buy that book for school, but couldn’t. Sah-weet giveaway!
Ok, we usually do a couple of fall things:
1st the Pumpkin Patch at an orchard. Tons of fun. The Not-Yet-A-Depression Depression put a nix on that this year. I’m hoping the kiddos don’t notice.
2nd We go to our church’s Family Camp at a beautiful camp. It’s a really fun bonding time with our church family. Honestly, it’s not that bonding for us as a family, we’re together all the time! :-) But it’s still something we look forward to.
3rd We read the true story of Thanksgiving during the week of Thanksgiving and we reenact out each part of the story that we read that night. I bought this book from Family Life today: http://store.familylife.com/detail.asp?id=7284
It’s SUPER! We have such a great time reading and reenacting. It’s one of my favorite things about the fall.
4th: On Thanksgiving day each person fills out a pretty card (came from the book above) listing 5 things they are thankful for. I have these all together in an album. It’s so special to look back and see what we each remembered for that year.

What a fun idea! Believe it or not, my favorite thing to do in the fall is Fall Planting. Down here in Austin, TX, the fall is the best time to plant perennials like trees & shrubs, as well as wildflowers, some annuals, and lots of vegetables. We grow salad greens year-round (we have to cover for a few weeks–but not much), as well as broccoli, sugar-snaps, etc. I miss Autumn as I knew it growing up in the Northeast, but Autumn in TX has its own glories–it’s almost like a second spring after the desiccating heat of summer. And needless to say, my kids are glad to be outside non-stop, too!

We go on hayrides at the pumpkin patch and then carve pumpkins together.

We usually drive about a half hour away and get boxes of apples to enjoy. We’ve enjoyed the same pumpkin patch for the last 6 years, and we always make sure to carve a pumpkin or two for fun!

What a great giveaway! Here are a few of our family’s favorites:

Apple picking
Using our wood pile for the first time…mmm, fire!
Taking a hike (or two!)
Ubiquitous leaf pile jumping
Making hot cider with cranberries & cinnamon sticks
Nuzzling wooly bear caterpillars (well, the kids nuzzle, I just admire)

Hmm, thought the “U’s” would give me more trouble than “N,” must be late at night! Thanks for sponsoring the contest, I sure enjoy your blog!

We like to go Apple Picking in the nearby mountains. The orchard is very quaint, and the nearby town has lots of festivities going on. It really feels like Fall up there, and everyone is just a little bit happier.

We love to go to the apple orchard, where we go on a hay ride and pick apples. Then we buy fresh, warm donuts and cider. I am taking my two year old niece next week while my children are in school. Also we visit a farm that has a huge corn maze and go on a hayride through their “haunted woods” Hands down, fall is my favorite season of the year.

Hello! My mother started this wonderful tradition of having a pumpkin carving party in her backyard. She makes a bunch of food and buys a dozen pumpkins or so (but most everyone brings their own pumpkins) and the kids have a blast playing in the leaves and using sharp knives lol

Well, we’ve already been on a hayride and took a drive to see the fall colors(and they are GORGEOUS this year!!), so we’ll probably just play in the leaves in a week or two and go to the pumpkin patch.

We can’t wait for November to roll around, and deer hunting to start! It’s a great outdoor activity, AND we’re able to refill the freezer for the year!!

I love to for a drive through the country and visit a candy shop that is about forty minutes away. We also like to attend our local pumpkin patch. The kids love playing in the corn kernal “sandbox”.

I may be too late for the contest, but oh well, here goes our family favorite fall activity. Halloween night is really busy at our house (six children), but I love to have something yummy bubbling away for dinner while they are out trick or treating. So I always make my favorite chili in the crock pot. As cold little kiddies come tromping in with their bags full of treats, I scoop them up chili in a bread bowl, they add their own cheese, or sour cream, or chips. I check their candy (the reeses p-nut butter cups are mine!!) we laugh about their experiences, they help answer the door for the rest of the evening. And a fun night is had by all!! Thanks!
