Makin’ Memories & Pretzels

Don’t tell me what you are gonna do tomorrow or this weekend unless you wanna read ’bout how we did it too, ‘cuz I’ll probably think it’s a good idea and do it too, and then blog about it.  And really?  There’s only a limited amount of time in the day and I’m already busy copying my real life friends’ ideas.  Just sayin’.

So Faith just casually mentioned that she found a pretzel recipe that sounded good.  (By the way, y’all should go visit her blog.  She’s really gettin’ the hang of it now.)  Anyway, back to the pretzel story.  The recipe is on allrecipes.com and was super easy to accomplish, but only because I used my Bosch.  I don’t wanna try this by hand. That was some kinda stiff dough.  And I added about a ½ cup more water than it called for.

I had originally thought that it would make a nice treat for the Pirates and my dh when they got back from playin’ soccer, since it’s cold outside (finally) and they would be hungry.  Wait.  They’re always hungry, so maybe the timing was just about the weather.  But, anyway, that’s not how it worked out.  I didn’t get ‘em started anywhere near early enough.

The Pirates were already back from soccer before the dough was even done rising.  So when it was time for forming the dough into pretzels and gettin’ ‘em into the oven I decided that I couldn’t (read-didn’t wanna) do it all by myself.  Let me tell you, this was the most fun we’ve had in the kitchen in a long time.

Makin’ pretzels is actually a lot of work.  There are a lot of things to do.

  • Rolling out the ropes of dough.
  • Tying them into knots.
  • Dipping them into the baking soda/water (who knew?).
  • Sprinkling the salt on.
  • Putting them into and out of the oven.
  • Taking pictures of the whole process.

Now that’s a lot of jobs.  Wasn’t God great to give me enough children to handle each of those jobs all at once?  And, if you’ll look over the list again, you’ll notice that each job calls for a different level of kitchen skills.

See? Hungry, hungry children. And the pretzels were crazy delicious!

And, the temp needs to be lowered to 380 in my opinion…unless your using an oiled baking stone. I tried it both ways, the baking stone pretzels were much better!

Also, the baking soda and water makes the crunchy thin “pretzel” crust!

My pretzels turned out sooooo goooooddd! I used only 4 cups of flour instead of 5, and I think next time…(there will be a next time!) I will do more liquid instead…I didn’t take pictures, but i made mine bigger and more open (Philly style)…I am gonna make some cheese sauce tomorrow to dip em in! P.S. these freeze well!
