What about those creepy "Sweet 16" shows where the daughters freak out if they don't get exactly the right color car? That doesn't come from a normal upbringing. It's almost a kind of child abuse, because these kids can't possibly be ready for the real world. BTW, I can't stand those video shows, either. I never did get the humor of laughing at others. What a great name for it! I never understood what was so funny about a little child falling over, hurting themselves and crying. How could anyone laugh at someone else's - especially a child's - confusion and pain? It really does take all the special out of it if you overdo it. I remember one year the children somehow managed to get a ton of gifts. I looked under the tree after we'd placed everything there and felt sick rather than excited. The children didn't appreciate it all either; they got gift fatigue. What a waste! How much better is it to give a few well-chosen gifts so ALL the gifts are special and it's easier to concentrate on what Christmas is REALLY about.
