Y’all regular readers will recall that I’ve got a hitch in my get-along.  (That’s Texan for – I cannot stand up for more than about 5 minutes at once.)  I’ll get over it, but in the mean time I AM BORED OUTTA MY GOURD!!!  (I bet y’all didn’t even know I am ordinarily in a gourd.)

So I decided I was gonna make this, which seemed really cool, because it uses this…

…which I have in abundance in a box on my front porch.  (I’m waiting for the thrift store to come pick it up.)

So I though that would make a fun little pastime for me.  Until I actually started doing it.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Recycled Bags site, I have made lots of the crochet items there, and she posts lots of  free patterns.  She even warns us that vhs tape is difficult to work with.

But she didn’t say anything about the squeeking.  For every move it makes there is a squeek.  It even bothered my children, and my children are NOISY!

Forget that!  I ditched that project before the first minute passed.

That’s ok.  I found other things to do.

I tweaked a free pattern and made 4 of these holiday coasters.

But the vhs tape was sitting here on my desk, and I just couldn’t bring myself to throw it away because I had come to think of it as a resource.  Something that could be re-purposed.  And there is just soooo much of it.

Then it hit me.

I know it’s black, but it’s shiny!  (and by the way, black is piratey!)  And you can make it curl!  And it’s free!  And, no, that stuff doesn’t come off on your hands or the wrapping paper or even the blade of the scissors when you curl it!  And between two feature length movies I doubt I will run out of ribbon… maybe ever!

Wow – that bag was ambitious! I could use the ribbon idea! OR it would occupy my 3 year old for at least a half hour…I could give her the tape (outside) and let her unroll!

How did you ever come up with that? Very creative idea!

I’m a bit like that. Once I get the idea in my head that I can use something I can’t bear to throw it away. Good idea using the tape as ribbon.

  7. Brilliant! I like to wrap presents in cool magazine pages or newspaper so this is the perfect way to finish off the look. I can’t wait to try it!

    Thanks for the tip!

  8. I was all excited about this idea and even printed out the directions to make the crocheted bag before reading the rest of your post . . . oh bummer, I don’t think I could take the squeak at every stitch either. Sigh. Thanks for the excitement, though! Got my little frugal heart beating a little faster for a moment.
