Coupon Shopping – It Can Be Done

   Posted by: MotherHen   in Extra-Categorical

…in which my dim bulb shines a bit brighter!

Change the way you shop.  Do it now!  You have no idea how much money you can save until you just do it!

I’ll admit, my first few trips to Wag’s (that’s super-cool coupon shopper lingo for Walgreen’s, you’re not allowed to call it Wag’s until you have saved $50 just by shopping there.) (ok, I made up the rule.) and CVS actually did not save me any money. That was before I started to understand how it works.

I might be a special case.  I am a slow learner.  Really slow.  I am a kinesthetic/visual/stubborn/slow learner.  So I have to see it, touch it, and try it out several times, making some mistakes as I go, before it all begins to gel.

But last evening Hubby and I went to our third Walgreen’s in two days (they’re everywhere around here, and we’re scouting for a favorite) and it all started to make sense to me.  I feel like I am coming out of a fog.

I’m not really with-it enough to lay out the deals the way Deal Seeking Mom does, she really makes it simple, but here are some photos of my haul.

My bottom line for yesterday’s Wag’s run is really impressive.  I spent $2.05 and came home with items totaling a retail value of $78.25.  That included a gallon of milk and a couple loaves of bread, and those had no coupon.  I am certainly getting paid to bring stuff home.  Weird, huh?

I know that looks like a ton of vitamins and shampoo, but, we won’t have to pay full price for vitamins or shampoo, ever again.  We’ll just use this stock-pile until they go on super-duper deal again, then we’ll buy another stock-pile.  That’s part of the program that took me so long to figure out.  You don’t go shop for what you are out of.  You shop for what’s on special now.  And you buy enough to last until that item goes on special again.  Really different from how I used to shop.

There were a million coupons in this last Sunday paper, so I chose the right time to (re)start.

I, now, fully understand why some chicks go on and on about this and why there are so many blogs devoted to helping us learn how to do this.

If you have a Walgreen’s or 2 near you, check out From Wags to Riches.  Such a cute name for a blog, and deals for Wag’s laid out in a way that I understand ‘em.  So, you know it’s plain talk.

The Michael’s deal cost much more money than the Wags deal, but their sale and coupons saved me a big wad of dough, even so.  I got a cart full of yarn all at 50% off, a set of 3 pairs of knitting needles for 40% off, and a set of 5 crochet hooks also at 40% off. Hubby was with me, so we each used one 40% off coupon.

He’s been buying my yarn for a long time, so he really appreciated the savings.

great job! Isn’t it funny how exciting it can be? I seriously get giddy when I get deals like this! When I come home with bags full of stuff and a huge grin on my face my DH knows I’m going to make him guess how much I spent! I love it!

my family actually buys items from my stockpile – they realize that i got it for free. but buying it from me they don’t have to fight the crowds, be tempted to buy more than they need, and they don’t have to pay tax!

I too took quite a while to digest how couponing really works. I made a CVS run this week and felt really good about my savings! I can’t wait to try again next week, and will add on Walgreens when I feel I’m getting CVS down pat. Glad to know they’re working out for you!

Look!
Another beginner! I’m glad to know I’m not alone. You and I are doing the stores in opposite order. I had a CVS card and lost it. So, while I am waiting for the replacement card to come in the mail I am learning Wag’s. :D

I’ve been a couponer for about 5 years now and it has really helped me keep my debt-addled head above water. You are right–it is better to buy something on sale than to wait until you need it! It looks like you’re doing a great job with your stockpile.
I love the first of the year–it’s like Coupon Heaven, there are so many flyers in the paper!

PS–you don’t have to wait for the CVS card! Just give them your phone number at the register and they can look up your number that way.

I’ve couponed for years. But it took me some time to realize that yes, you will notice a huge difference in savings when you make attempts to match coupons with whatever is on sale that week.

Wow, thanks, Momma! That would be great. I am like a dog with a bone on this coupon shopping. I am determined to learn it inside out, so that it becomes second nature to me. I appreciate your help. :D
