Menu Plan Monday – Hot Cereal Trick

My hubby has requested more meat free meals, so here we go.

I hope to be making more bread this week.  More than what, you may ask.  More than the none that I have baked this whole entire year (2009).  That should help with the lunch plans.

Breakfast will be hot cereal for most of us.  Smoothies for the fortunate grown-ups. :D

I decided that I should have the Pirates get the large sauce pan and the large and medium measure pitchers out in the evening so they are ready and waiting when I wanna start the hot cereal in the morning.  That way I don’t have to do any leaning and not as much standing first thing in the morning.  And I don’t cook the cereal as long as the box says to, I just cook it some and put the lid on and move it to a cool burner for 10 minutes or so.  That works fine.  Then I come back and add milk, butter, sugar and a little cinnamon, and give it a good stir and start serving.  “Bring your bowl and spoon!”  Too easy!  Just remember to rinse the pot and bowls right away.

I did try the crockpot oats, but I didn’t use the steel cut oats, I just used my old fashioned oats. This, of course, made glue. Maybe I’ll try again with the right kind. ;)

Have you tried crockpot oatmeal? Found a great recipe on About.com under “busy cooks”. Uses steel cut oats (the kind that are very unprocessed and take 30 minutes to cook). Wake up to a steaming pot of hot oatmeal! It’s good, too! Came over to your blog from moneysavingmom. Laughed hard at your comments about the boys making volcanoes on their heads with baking soda and vinegar!!!

Excellent menu! Wish I was coming to dinner all week!

  5. This is my first time visiting your blog. Love a lot of your ideas. We (my family and I) are on our third week of meal planning and we are running into a wall of lack of creativity. I will be back.

Yes, because dried-on oatmeal is just EVIL! My gosh, you could patch walls with that stuff. =)

    I love oatmeal.

That’s pretty nifty that your husband is asking for more meat-free meals. Fabulous! =)

Yummy menu! The rice and beans sound great, and so much easier than any of my recipes. Thanks!

Not real clear on that one myself. I think it’s mostly for the health benefits. We tend to eat more pork than we ought to, since it’s cheap. And we need to put more of the other foods into our diets. Like fruits and veggies. We probably already get our share of grains and more than our share of dairy. But also because of the cost. Rice & Beans is on his top 10 list of favorite dinners, for these reasons. Cheap eats. High fiber, we are old. Complete protein without meat. And it’s very delicious.

I’m making your Alfredo sauce this week. My kids LOVE the jar suff, I’m hoping to make the switch to homemade.
I have to ask… Why is your man asking for less meat?!
