Congratulations! You have been to to Ship Full O' Pirates over 100 times! Just thought you'd like to know.

Welcome to the premier of Mother Hen’s Homemade Thursday.  My post today is from my kitchen, but please don’t think I’m limiting this Mister Linky to food.  I hope you’ll link your posts about any homemade item you or your family create.  From crocheted pot holders to backyard forts to flower gardens, if it’s homemade by you or any member of your family link it here!

I can’t wait to see all the things y’all are making at your house!  I’ll try to share something we’re making at our house every week.  This week it’s the world’s best tasting….

Applesauce!

I didn’t plan on doing this, and I’m really glad, because if I had planned to do it I would have spent a ton of time reading up on it and a fair amount of time worrying it over in my mind, and lots of the worry time would have been in the middle of the night, and I have far better things to do in the middle of the night than worry about applesauce.

So, I just rose up outta my chair here at the desk and said to the middle Pirate, “Go out in the garage and bring me all those apples.  And bring me 7 quart jars while you’re at it.”  And we were off.  I didn’t even have the instructions ready at that point.  I just started culling apples and set some kids to washin’ and slicin’.  I did all the peeling myself.

Note to self:  Buy 2 more apple peelers before buying another box of apples.

Anyway, I found tons of very helpful instructions on how to make and can applesauce on a site called Pick Your Own.  They even have pictures.  Very cool site.

Did I mention I haven’t ever made applesauce before?  Never.  I canned tomatoes and pickles 20 years ago, or so, but never applesauce.

(Sorry about my granny elbow in yer face.)

That said, our impromptu canning session went amazingly (read – I’m totally surprised) well.

So this was our practice run with the canner I picked up at a garage sale this Summer.  (Pretty good $5 investment, huh?)

(Good grief this towel looks ratty.  Oh well, we aren’t about appearances, obviously.)

We gardened a bit this week, and I guess thinking about the tomatoes we will plant in a few weeks got me thinkin’ about canning those apples that I really thought would get eaten fresh, but, oh well.

I’m really looking forward to having a more diverse garden this spring.  We layered 3 beds in newspaper and compost today.  We do a combo of  Square Foot Gardening and  Lasagna Gardening.  These two methods really cut down on the work.  Well, having The Pirates do the work is what really cuts down on my work.

Ok, Mister Linky seems to be on the job, for the time being, so we will go by the usual Mister Linky Rules.

I am looking forward to seeing all of your projects that you’ve been working on.  This ought to be fun!

I made a bunch of apple sauce and pear sauce this fall when I had fruit coming out of my ears. It’s so, so easy. I even made a few batches in the crock pot – even easier!
I’ll have to look into lasagna gardening, I’m planning a square foot garden for this spring myself!

  3. I just love homeade apple sauce and I love love LOVE canning. Isn’t it nice to know your growing your own groceries in your garden? Keep up the good work and the blogging about it. I love your blog!

I can’t believe I didn’t burn or scorch mine. I was awfully negligent while it was cooking. I guess it was beginner’s luck. :D

I know you said not just limited to food. But that is all we seem to be doing right now. It is just to cold and snowy to do much else here is the urban environment. LOL! So I am including a link to the breads that we have been making recently.

By the way the applesauce looks really good. When I did mine it scorched a little. I know better for next time.

Hi Jeanie, I think a brand new canner can be had for about $35.
