Homemade Thursday- Crochet

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed

Congratulations! You have been to to Ship Full O' Pirates over 100 times! Just thought you'd like to know.

A word before I get started.  I am concerned that my Homemade Thursday posts may be a discouragement to some of you who have babies or toddlers or both.   I don’t think it’s realistic to do many crafts or projects during this season of your life unless you have older children or someone to help you.

I was in that boat until just a few years ago.  That’s part of the reason I enjoy crafts so much now.  I did wait for a long time to be able to play, and now that my baby is all six goin’ on 19 (that’s another post altogether) I have the time to do stuff.

I just want you to know that it isn’t my intent to discourage you.  But I’ll understand if you skip my blog on Thursdays.

(nekkid crockpot)

I saw a picture of this on one of those sites that sell patterns.  They wanted $4 just for the pattern.  I just thought it looked way simple, so I examined it for a few minutes and then gave it a nice long think.

What is needed is a big, flat circle for the base.  Then just straight sides, like a can cozy straight up the sides.  Top it off with short handles that can hold the lid in place by looping over the knob/handle on the lid, yet sturdy enough to carry with.

(wearing its’ Sunday best)

I love the concept because it’s something I will use.  Our church has a fellowship meal almost every Sunday, so my crockpots are in the back of the van frequently.  And we did have a baked bean-tastrophy one time.  Now the crockpots ride in very sturdy boxes, but this little Sunday suit for my pot will keep the lid in place and keep things warm while we travel.

I don’t have instructions to link to.  I get squirmy inside when I think about writing them myself.  I will tell you  that I used 2 strands of worsted weight yarn and double crochet for almost the whole thing.  I also had to try it on several times to see where to stop for the height and what size to make the handles.  Part of the ‘crochet brain’ is being ok with undoing some stitches to make improvements.

(Oh, the cord just gets tucked in-between the clothes and the pot.)

Now it’s your turn!  What have you made?  If you have a photo or a link to the instructions, please include them.  If not, that’s ok too, just tell us all about it.  And you may reach back into your archives for this.  I won’t insist on only “fresh” posts, as long as it’s never been linked here before.  It might be new to many of us.

Please link here in the Mister Linky box.  If you don’t have a blog you can still play along,  just tell all about it in the comments box.

Here are the Mister Linky rules:

  • Put your name in the first box with a (brief description) in parenthesis.
  • Put your permalink in the second box.
  • Leave the link for your post, not your homepage.
  • Put a link to Ship Full O’ Pirates somewhere in your post.
  • Feel free to use any of the banners we create for this.

I am looking forward to seeing all of your projects that you’ve been working on.  This ought to be fun!

What is with these doctors? I got told the same thing. I bought in for a while and then changed doctors (for a different reason) and I never mentioned the BAD advice I had already been heeding (just not in the permanent sense). No looking back! That was six children ago. :D

I was inspired by your crochet crock-pot holder… really great! I went back into my archives to link a recycled tote bag I made. Also, Tiger-girl enjoyed linking last week and this week linked some cookies she made with Smurf. The first link went wonky so I had to link it again (sorry for the mistake).
I’d just like to say how much I am enjoying ‘Homemade Thursdays’ and looking at what everyone has linked. I also never had time for much crafty making stuff when my children were small, but I can remember having crafty-ish thoughts which I now do have time for. We would have loved to have had more children (we had 4 in 5 years) but way back then doctors spoke scary stuff over us about my health. NOW I would have had faith to go ahead & trust the Lord & had many more children, but back then I got talked into medically intervening to stop us having more children. I am still SAD about that decision. Kinda pouring it all out today aren’t I?

It encourages me to help remember that there will come a day that my little ones won’t be so dependant and time consuming and I WILL have time to do stuff again. It helps me to enjoy the NOW to remember that it is temporary, if you know what I mean :)

Thank you so much, Kristine! It always feels so great to get an award! But being called friend is the best reward! :D

    Hi Laura Grace,

I also have a great big oval crockpot and haven’t made the Sunday suit for it yet. I have been pondering the handles for it. I think they should be one third of the way, ya know, kinda cutting the top in thirds. I would also make something to tie the handles to each other for added lid security. Maybe crochet a tab onto one of the handles to wrap around the other handle and button to itself, the way soft side luggage handles do. But these handles would need to have some give in ‘em so they can reach each other. Does that make sense?

Oh, my soul, that is one impossibly darling crock pot cozy. I am sending this link to my mother immediately, because I no longer remember how to crochet.

One question, handle-placement-wise… if a person had one of those great big oval crock pots, would you suggest any general handle adjustments for that person?

    Thanks!

    Laura Grace

OH! P.S.! I’m making shampoo just as soon as I run out of ye olde industrial-solvent-containing stuff. Thanks for the inspiration and the recipes, and for linking to Little House in the Suburbs!! :)

I’m glad no one was hurt, but, now I’m hungry for chili cheese dip. 8)

I coulda used one of your crock pot “cozies” one night when my dh and I were traveling to a get-together… me on the passenger side with a nice pot of chili cheese dip on the floorboard between my feet. Someone pulled out in front of us and dh had to slam on the brakes. The crock pot tipped, lid came off (here’s where I see the cozy may have saved the day) and chili cheese dip was all over the carpeted floorboard. oh boy. I didn’t think the car would ever smell the same again! :)

Thanks Cyndi! It helps to be a “thinkin’ outside the box” kinda mama. We are always makin’ things, just sometimes (particularly when we are sleep deprived) it’s hard to see our efforts as creative. 8)

You could become a multi-millionaire if you make and market those to Baptist women! LOL! I grew up in a Baptist church and we currently attend one. My DH and I always joke that Baptists can’t get together with out food and that means crockpots!

Also… I look at homemade Thursdays as a challenge, not a discouragement. With a four month old it just means I have to be happy if my post is about baby food (Which I do have to start making soon.) and not my quilt in progress. I guess I don’t take myself to seriously either. Today’s post is an old one but I’ve never posted it here and 99% of your readers have probably never seen it.
