Y’all hear me talk a lot about The Cap’n and all the cool things he has been doin’ lately. He bought a cool camera and is taking lots and lots of amazing photos. He has taken up carpentry and is making some really handy things for around the house. (Tune in tomorrow for a feature on one of his items.)
But I haven’t said much about Calico Zak lately. Calico is my second son. And while The Cap’n is an industrious go-getter, Calico is an artist. I’ve known this since he was very small, age 3 or so. My boy can draw. And he has an eye for it, as well.

I can’t remember who I am quoting when I say, “We are all born artists but most of us grow out of it.” I take this to mean that many of us let other things interfere with our artistic sensibilities.
I am also here to tell you it’s true. Calico is the one who taught me this. When he was very little he could draw. Now I am not just a bragging mom. The child could draw. He could draw, at age 4, like I wish I could draw now. Then I taught him to read and his drawing ability started to fade. Once I realized what was going on I backed way off on the formal academics. I am so glad his drawing talent recovered.
Can open, worms everywhere.
I am not saying that academics don’t mix with art. I am saying we must tread lightly and carefully with the “formal” academics so as not to damage our children’s creativity.
Now recently Calico Zak has taken to borrowing my camera. He is enjoying expressing his artistic ability through photography, and he would like you to have a look at his blog called Calico Zak.
He’s really just getting started and could use some encouragement, so leave him a nice comment.
