When I bake our daily bread I make 5 loaves at a time.  Today I wanted to make Pirate Bread too, so I made two loaves of sandwich bread and used the rest of the bread dough to make 3 Pirate Bread rolls.  That’s Pizza Rolls for you lubbers.

I use freshly ground whole wheat, but I think any bread dough will do for this.  And once the dough is made the rest of the recipe is smooth sailing.

You’ll need:

  • 1 lb ground meat, browned – I used pork because that’s what I had.
  • 1 lb cheese, grated – I used cheddar because that’s what I had.
  • oregano, onion powder, garlic powder, parsley – a good sprinkle of each on each roll.
  • Options – diced onions, sliced mushrooms, diced peppers, whatever.

That’s it.  On a clean, oiled table you roll out one loaf worth of the dough like for cinnamon rolls.  Toss on some meat.  Throw on the cheese.  Sprinkle on the seasonings.

Fold the sides over a little so it doesn’t all leak out while baking.  Then roll up like cinnamon rolls.  But don’t cut it yet.  Lay the whole log on a grease/oiled cookie tray and bake at 350° for about 30-35 minutes.  Let it cool a bit, then you can cut it into slices.

This recipe suits me right down to the ground.  I’m not much on pizza sauce anyway.  And these are a wonderful substitue for regular pizza.   Enjoy!
