Works for me Wednesday – Ants

No, ants do not work for me.  But it is a fun concept.  There are so many of them that if they did work for me…

Anyway…

I had some ants, by the back door.  And you know me, I don’t wanna spray poison around my house.  So I googled it.  (Maybe I should post a WFMW about google,  that can be for next week maybe.)

Anyhooo…

I found a reasonable alternative to Raid Ant & Roach spray.  Baby powder.  The kind I have has Chamomile and Lavender.  Smells very nice.  And no more ants at my back door.  TADA!!!

Actually, I don’t think it kills ‘em.   I think they just went away.  And I am pretty sure dead ants don’t go to heaven and they certainly don’t become angels even if they did go to heaven.  But I like the picture.

I used Terro from Walmart, but I’ve heard draw a chalk line & they won’t cross it. Vinegar water works too.

Hi Khara, yeah, that’s the one I was lookin’ at. Sounds like it’ll fit the bill. Not gonna hurt us, is gonna kill those horrible, nightmare inducing water-bugs, not gonna break the bank. I can do that.

  3. Khara says:

Try boric acid. It repels and kills ants as well as roaches. You can find it in the hardware store in the insect repellent section. And before you start the “I have kids/pets” explanation, it is as poisonous as table salt. It means, don’t let them eat it in large quantities. It’s also CHEAP. So, hopefully, if you are careful and watch your little pirates around it, it may help immensely. :) Good luck!

Wow, how interesting! Please keep us updated; it will be interesting to see if they keep away. We’re using a pest control thing here and I’m not so sure it’s helping at all – we seem to have just as many bugs…and all those chemicals!

  6. Very, very strange picture! :) I wonder what it is about the Baby Powder that makes them pack their bags??

I love this idea because where we get ants a lot is on the floor of the bathroom near the sink. We spill powder on the floor in the bathroom anyways …

Well, I was impressed with the instant results. I sprinkled the stuff around the doorway, in and out, then went to the ladies room. By the time I came back the ants were gone. TADA!!!
Now I need to find out what to do for the water-bugs that will arrive in a few weeks.

Thanks Dave, I love that sideways 8 tip. I think it’ll help a few of the Pirates get over their pencil allergy.

I know, there’s something very appealing about an angel ant. Go figure!

I once read that you could draw a chalk line at the base of your door and ants would not cross it. It didn’t work for me. I will have to try this in the spring when the tiny black ants want to vistit through the front door!

  12. Buffie says:

I’ll have to remember this idea. The ants like to invade my kitchen every spring. It drives me nuts and I also don’t like using chemicals.

  13. Cyndi Lewis says:

I can’t stand ants (inside at least). At least my ants are black ants and not red ants. I have no problem spraying them when they are in my house. They creep me out too much. I will try the baby powder thing inside and the cornmeal idea is good too. It isn’t quite time for the ants to reappear here in Michigan yet. However they might pop up since we’ve been above freezing for the last few days.

  14. Another fantastic idea. I read your blog regularly. My 7 year old loves pirates. My 9 year old is doing that writing blog on Mondays you posted about on Frugal Friday a few weeks back. Thanks again for all your excellent ideas! I usually dont talk about my wfmw posts in my comments but my wife guest blogged for me this week. She wrote about a writing exercise and I thought you and your fam might be interested. Let me know what you think.

I’m gonna have to try this, this season! I’ve also read that you can sprinkle cornmeal around where they come in, they eat it and it doesn’t digest so they die. Hmmm, the powder sounds more humane…lol.
