I am not, nor will I ever be a crochet pattern writer.

OK, now that I got that off my chest, I will proceed to show and (try to) tell how to make these handy-dandy little homemade applicators for the homemade deodorant

First, locate a mug cozy that doesn’t fit any mug ever created and start unraveling down to the last 2 rows that form the circular disc.

OR you could…

Chain 3, 11 dc in 1st ch,join to 3rd ch in starting ch.

Round 2.  Ch 2 (will count as dc, now and forever more) and work 2 dc in each dc around, join to 1st dc.

Row 3.  Ch 2, dc in each dc around, join to 1st dc.

Row 4.  Ch 2, work dec dc over 2 dc in each dc around, join to 1st dc.

The Handle.  Ch 8 and sl st to any st across the middle at outer edge of previous row.  SL st in an adjacent st, ch 1, hdc in each ch of handle.

Sl st to any adjacent st of outer edge of previous row.  I do it backwards so the handle has an upright attitude (a self-righteous handle, tehe!).

Finishing.   Smush the top flat to the bottom.  Leave a long tail (6-8 inches) and using tail and yarn needle sew top to bottom around last row, weave in end.

TADA!

These take me about 10 minutes each, which is handy, since I like to have lots on hand.  The plan is that the Pirates may have a new one whenever they think they need one, and whenever I refill their homemade deodorant container, which, once upon a time was a 1 qt yogurt container.

Just so ya know.  This is the most effective deodorant we have ever used, and I am a good judge of that as a mom of teen-aged boys who work hard.  And I find it to be very economical.

I really don’t know what I paid for the boxes of cornstarch and baking soda.  I paid about $6 for our new 2 oz. bottle of tea tree oil at StuffMart.  I use about ¼ cup of each of the powders and about ¼ tsp of the tea tree oil per batch of deodorant.  I have no idea what it really costs to make it, go ask Kim, she lives for doing stuff like this in her head.  She probably even remembers what she paid for her cornstarch and baking soda.

Now it’s your turn!  What have you made?  If you have a photo or a link to the instructions, please include them.  If not, that’s ok too, just tell us all about it.  And you may reach back into your archives for this.  I won’t insist on only “fresh” posts, as long as it’s never been linked here before.  It might be new to many of us. Please link here in the Mister Linky box.  If you don’t have a blog you can still play along,  just tell all about it in the comments box. Here are the Mister Linky rules:

  • Put your name in the first box with a (brief description) in parenthesis.
  • Put your permalink in the second box.
  • Leave the link for your post, not your homepage.
  • Put a link to Ship Full O’ Pirates somewhere in your post.
  • Feel free to use any of the banners we create for this.

I am looking forward to seeing all of your projects that you’ve been working on.  This ought to be fun!

Yes, TOO easy, TOO inexpensive and TOO effective. Don’t you love it when doing the better thing works out that way. It seems like I’ve spent a lot of time in my life being discouraged by trying to do the better thing, only to find out it’s just too hard, or too expensive, or just plain NOT better. I love it when I can do the better thing and it just plain works. This is one of those. It’s a keeper.

Ok, now this is just too neato! I just read your recipe and review of the homemade deodorant. Sometimes I run across a recipe that is just TOO easy and TOO inexpensive NOT to make. I’ve never tried the homemade deodorant before, now I’ve just gotta make it…especially since it kept you stinky free for 48 hours. (oops, I wasn’t supposed to blab that was I? You said so in your post about the deodorant!) :) Anyway, thanks for posting this.
It’sjust one more reason why I just love coming here!

Really cute & functional crochet… LOVE THEM!
I linked to my finished quilt… nearly didn’t manage it… there’s a scary late-at-night photo of me doing the final hand stitching all the way around the edge and I do not look my best (but posted it for bloggy posterity!)
Glad you’re back & kept Homemade Thursday :)
