Congratulations! You have been to to Ship Full O' Pirates over 100 times! Just thought you'd like to know.
Go buy a packet of lettuce seeds and plant ‘em right now. I’ll wait.
Painless, inexpensive, organic salads will be at your very fingertips in just a few weeks.
Painless because you can plant lettuce in containers and set them at a height that is pain-free to work at. Come on, you know that’s the #1 argument against gardening, the sore back and the hurting knees.
Inexpensive because the seeds are $1.79, the soil is $1, watering one or two pots of lettuce is negligible on your water bill.
Organic, well, just don’t put chemicals on it.
Water it when it needs it. Inspect it for disease or infestation when you water. Pick off any invaders, have your Pirates smush ‘em on the sidewalk.
Plant a loose leaf variety and harvest the outer leaves as they mature. This way you leave the plant intact to continue to provide salad for you and your family.

We did one lettuce tub on Saturday. We will be doing more when my new seeds arrive this week. But finally getting one done feels really good.
It is still early here in Utah, in fact we had snow this morning and are expecting a couple of more storms this week. But that should be fine for lettuce. I can always bring my tub into the garage if it gets too cold.
Thanks for the simple challenge. You are right, it only took a few minutes to put it together, including doing the holes in the dishpan.

Yay! Very easy!
This is a great idea. I think I even have a packet of lettuce seeds already, and a container to plant them in. I now have a project for my kids for the week!

Julie, I am using old dishpans from the Dollar Tree that my son drilled holes in for drainage.
You make it sound so easy, I think I could do this. What size pot?

I love me some fresh lettuce! There are few things that beat walking out to the garden in the summer and cutting a fresh salad (organic at that!).
Amy, that only works on the loose-leaf varieties. If yours makes a head then it isn’t intended to be harvested that way.
My lettuce is just coming up outside… first time I’ve ever grown it before. I didn’t know you could just pick the outer leaves and leave the plants. Thanks!!

A friend of mine gave me some lettuce seedlings last fall, I put them in an old wooden crate and they are still growing beautifully. I live in Nor. Cal. so while we do get frosts, it’s never devastating to my plants if I give them a little shelter.

YAY ANN!!!
Okay, you’ve convinced me with your containers and all. I’m just going to do it. Today. Seriously, I’m going to dig around the garage and shed and see what I can find to plant lettuce, and I’m going to plant it and eat it and be healthy. All thanks to you.

I planted it in the GROUND last year and surprise! it got neglected. Long ago, when knees and back didn’t influence me so much, I learned how easy lettuce can be. Looking forward to a good lettuce crop this year.
Mine is sprouting up already. It’s always my favorite!
