I really wanted a green smoothie today.  I didn’t buy any spinach this week and not much is happening in the garden.

Well, there are dandelions.

When the dandelions are young and small they aren’t very bitter, and they’re just chock full of nutrients.

Yes I did.

I made a dandelion smoothie.  The kids even tried it… and they KNEW about the dandelions!

For the record that’s 2 bananas, some yogurt, and a small dandelion plant (washed and the little root removed).  I added some strawberries after I got it started.  It was yummy!

Oh, I always do things the hard way. I didn’t even think of the parsley that I had to walk past to get to the dandelions! 8)

Mmmm… green smoothies… deeelish. Had one for brekky this morning, only with parsley instead of dandelion greens. What a great idea! I’ll have to pass it along to my friend who makes dandelion wine out of the flowers.

Take note of the ingredients. Try not to scream.

Funnily enough, I had some of this drink a short time ago and it was AWFUL. I’m wondering if the drink I had in my youth was made with less chemical additives and thus tasted yummier?

Either that or my tastes have changed as I’ve grown.

Wow, I am gonna look for those woodsorel plants.

  7. MotherHen says:

Wow, they make a soda water out of herbs? Is it natural stuff? I’m curious! Must Google!

You go, girl! What a great idea.

My favourite soft drink in England used to be Dandelion and Burdock – made out of, you guessed it, dandelions and burdocks.

It was a dandy-lion! I had some in a salad at a fancy restaurant one time, along with some grass and leaves. I must be an adventurous eater as well!

You are one clever pirate! This is really an inspiring make-do story, where 21st century reaches back to the early 20th century to make something new.

I love to study herbs (which dandilions fall under) and keep telling my husband that I’m going to make a dandilion salad one of these days. He is not on board with “eating weeds”. I say, one day if food is scarce you’ll be happy to eat “weeds” and glad that I knew you could! He just shakes his head. LOL!

We call the green smoothies Shrek Shakes around here. The kids love them. I did too until I tried to eat one while pregnant. It didn’t stay down well… I’ve not been able to even think of Shrek Shakes the same since.

    True Story.
