Math~ Friend or Foe?

Posted by: MotherHen   in Homeschooling, Math

I have frittered my whole day away doing math with my kiddoes.  Well, not frittered.  We all know more math now than we did yesterday.  Yes, I include myself.  Billy Bones and Calico Zak are pushing me onward and upward in my quest to try to stay a half step ahead of them.  Yikes!

Did you know you can get the Saxon placement tests free online.  Love that!  Here are the links for the tests for 54 up through Algebra ½, Algebra 1 andAlgebra 2.

Calico took it and found he can go ahead and start Algebra ½, which thrilled him and sent shivers up my very spine.  So, I decided to take the test myself.

I am happy to report that if I were a student, I would be allowed to begin Algebra 1.  And no, I am not gonna be taking the higher grades tests.  I am just gonna apply myself and learn the stuff as I teach it to Calico.

I guess I have a couple of other Pirates who maybe, should take the same test.  Hmmm…

Math… love it or hate it. I have two kiddos who adore math and fly through it and one who struggles like I did with it. I find because I have never “liked” math that my teaching of it isn’t as heavy as subjects I like such as History and geography. My twelve year old gives up tears daily as she tries to “get” division and my eight year old son has his multiplication facts down in two weeks. (Something that took my above daughter months.) On the reverse, said daughter can read through books for pleasure with great fastness and said son would rather endure Chinese water torture then pick up a book for “fun”.

Strangely, I am finding that as long as I keep the pressure off, the Pirates are all coming around to loving math. They all start out as math haters. Seems like it all starts gelling at around age 11 or 12. There has got to be something else I can do for them before that point, to make it more fun, and natural. Maybe it’s more to do with emulating their Dad (a total math head).
