Cloudy- No Chance of Meatballs

Or any other meals cooked in the solar cooker.

We have no sunshine in our forecast until Monday.  So, all my solar cooking plans are on hold for this week.

So far the requests for solar try outs are:

  • Bread of all types
  • Granola
  • Fruit leather
  • Jerky

OK, the last two may not work, I don’t know, but I think that’s more of a job for a dehydrator and this box type of solar oven won’t do that.  But now that Faith recommended it I have a taste for both fruit leather and jerky.  So maybe there is a solar dehydrator in my future.

Speaking of the future, one of our future projects is to raise meat rabbits in the backyard.  Our own little hippity-hoppity ranch out back.  (I’ll work on the name.)

Any of y’all have any helpful words of encouragement or helpful instruction concerning meat rabbits?  We are starting from the ground up.  Gotta build the cages, shelters, nest boxes and everything.  I’ll take all the helpful info you have to offer.

Ha! We love Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs! The book that is! I have been enjoying your solar cooking experiments.

I’m interested to see how the rabbit thing goes. I would like meat rabbits as well. Just don’t name them. :)

Looks like you got out the pirate business just in time! Lots of bad pirate press lately! :)

Betty Crocker has a Cowboy Casserole recipe (with ground beef, beans, and biscuits) on their website. I thought of you when I saw it!! Maybe that could be a future solar oven dinner.

Are you sure you’re in Texas? I don’t remember too many cloudy days from my time there. I suppose its still hot though.

Yes, I was just thinking you got out of the pirate biz just in time, too.

As for rabbits- check out- You Can Farm by Joel Salatin. I just started reading it but I think he is a brilliant Christ centered farmer. Rabbits are on the front cover of the book. I think Vision Forum used to sell this book. I picked mine up from the library. I might go for rabbits and chickens for our back yard. I just need to figure out what to do with them in the winter. And find someone to “do the deed”. I don’t think I could kill them. I’m not Ma Ingalls yet and the DH didn’t sound too excited over the prospect. (The only sucessful hunt he has scored was a small wild rabbit. Skinning it was a lot of work for not much return.)

I have that book on my shelf. It was given to me as a Christmas gift by Hank.
I would love to have chickens. But they are noisy and I don’t wanna offend any neighbors. Rabbits can keep secrets. And Mister Cowboy is gonna teach all the Cowboys how to “do the deed.”
I’ll see ya later, I’m gonna go read that farming book.
Oh, and the clouds will be gone in a few weeks. Then we’ll begin wishing for clouds. This is just the last hurrah of Spring for us, scorching sun is a-comin’. 8)

Put those rabbits into separate cages ASAP! I didn’t realize how soon after birth they can reproduce. Prying dead baby rabbits off the bottom of the cage was a little too traumatizing for me. Several times. I’m not that quick on the draw! On a brighter note, their droppings are wonderful for the garden and you don’t have to compost them first!

Funny story about some Netherland Dwarfs we had. They lived in separate cages and we never (so I thought) put them together. One day the female began building her nest and I said to Mr. Cowboy, “Fluffy has lost her mind, she’s building a nest.” Couple days later there was movement in that crazy bunny’s nest! I said to Mr. Cowboy, “Wh… how……..um… what is going on here?” The kids overheard my uncharacteristic speechlessness and wanted to know why I was so bewildered. I explained that it looked like Fluffy had some babies which was completely impossible since she had never even been NEAR Mr. Rabbit, at which point many faces got all sheepish looking and it was divulged that one time when I was at the grocery store they had let both bunnies out of the cage a they played together on the sofa……

LOL about your dwarf rabbits!

I’ve been researching this too, though can’t make definite plans until we (hopefully) move later this year.

So far my favorite book is “Raising Rabbits the Modern Way.” He’s opinionated, but in a good way, and gives good foundation for his reasoning. In your part of the country your biggest concern is probably going to be keeping them cool in the summer, so double-roof your hutches, or grow vines over them, or locate them under trees, etc. so that you’ll have to do less of the “frozen water bottle swap” during the summer sizzle…
