I hadn't even thought about the "ruining the planet" aspect, but we are the one folks come to for that last bag of trash that they just can't cram into their own can. ;)

I LOVE lemon balm. We moved last year and we all miss it! We're just getting our garden going here in NE Wisconsin. So I'm jealous of all your green above the ground!

We are also the largest family on the block with the least amount of garbage...so much for large families ruining the planet with all their kids! :)

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the garden compliment.
Having been compost losers and successful composters I think it's very important to know what you are supposed to do and why. That said, composting is very easy, but it helps to follow the rules.
To start off you need plenty of leaves or some hay or straw to layer with your produce scraps. A way to confine it or the grace to not care about an unsightly heap. And water.
Around here, if we let our compost dry out it can turn into a giant fire ant mound in a big hurry.
Here are a couple of links so you can read up on it.

would you share more about how you are composting? I'm wanting to give it a go but don't know the "rules". Your set up looks interesting a "do-able" We have WAY too much garbage each week and I want to reduce it as much as I can. Plus, since we don't have trash pick up, I'm sure hubby would like fewer trips to the dump :-)

Your garden is lovely. I am late starting mine, but I'm gonna get SOMETHING growing the first of next week (it's gonna rain all weekend here in SC)

Oh, wow. You have baby tomatoes! Not just little plants, but actual green tomatoes. I haven't bought my plants yet. Because I'm still waiting for our "frost danger" date. Memorial Day weekend is coming though! And it looks like I'll end up waiting at least that long: Saturday & Sunday the overnight low is still getting into the 30's. We got barely any peppers last year because they got cold, so I'm waiting longer this year. Your compost bins are cool. I should get another one so I can turn my pile too. I'm sure it would be a happier pile. Happily, our city has compost that we can pick up for free, as well as mulch, so I can stay away from the chemicals anyway.

Ritsumei’s last blog post..Nature Study: In the Garden
