Yes, I realize that one buck would be happy to accommodate all the does, however, we have raised rabbits in the past and know that they can (and will) die from time to time. If the death is the buck then that would bring the breeding program to a grinding halt while we scramble to find a new daddy bunny. So, we have a pitch hitter right from the start.

I have had rabbits for years and they are fun! The manure is wonderful, it doesn't have to compost like ckicken or horse manure.

You could only have one buck and 5 does, the buck wouldn't have a problem servicing (sp..doesn't look right) 5 does, and if the does are all from diffrent breaders and diffrent lines genetics won't be a problem.

OHHH how exciting!! We are getting ready to move to a place that we could have rabbits and I have been debating it. I am grateful to have found your post and can't wait to see how it turns out for you.

Right, when I look at it (the right way) as start up costs for our newest business venture the dollar amount seems smaller than if I look at it (wrongly) as, "Man that's a lot of money for some bunny cages!" Perspective is everything! 8)

Why yes, Julie, they are meat rabbits. We haven't bought them yet, but we will be getting Californians, New Zealands, or Floridas. All are large breed, meat rabbits. The other benefit is the manure for the garden. With 6 large rabbits there will be plenty of manure for my veggie garden.

I had the same issue with supplies to start growing veggies. The money soon adds up! But long term it will be worth it! And there are things we bought this time we will only replace every few years and some we will never have to replace (hopefully), so that's good.

Not being a smarty pants here, but what's the point in having rabbits? I see lots of folks have them and I a wondering what the benefits are? Are they pets? Are they meat rabbits? Are they to raise and sell? Just very curious about the whole thing. I get chickens, but tell me why get rabbits? (besides the fact that they are so stinkin' cute and cuddly) :-)
