Congratulations! You have been to to Ship Full O' Pirates over 100 times! Just thought you'd like to know.

We got our meat rabbits Saturday afternoon.  They’re beautiful!

We got a young group and a breeding age group.  Each group having one buck and two does.  The breeding age group all were champions in live stock shows last Winter.

We are learning tons about the larger rabbits.  We have lots of experience with the Netherland dwarf rabbits.  We used to breed them when hubs was in the pet industry.  But the large breeds are somewhat different.  And they’re HUGE!!!

I decided to name them alphabetically.

On the right is Annabelle.  On the left is her handsome hubby, Bugs Bunny.

And this is the second bunny-wife to Bugs, her name is Clementine.

This is Daisy.  I’m told she has serious show potential.rabbits-024

This is Energizer Bunny.  I know you’ve always wondered what he looked like without his sunglasses and bass drum.  You may notice that he’s not the same breed as the others.  He’s a New Zealand and the others are Californians.  The cross breed offspring with make a better meat rabbit, eatin’ only, can’t raise ‘em for breeders.

And here is Foo-Foo, you know, Little Bunny Foo-Foo.

This is Sally Mae’s pet bunny, Cookie.  Cookie is not for eating, so why does she have the only food name of the bunch?

I used to show rabbits in 4H as a child. I remember that the 4H rabbit handbook had a section on butchering rabbits. It seemed pretty informative at the time and had some pictures. My rabbit them was not a food rabbit though. My grandfather used to raise rabbits to eat. I never knew it until I was older. Now I wish we had space to do it. How tasty and fresh! :)

These bunnies are adorable….too adorable! I couldn’t eat them. I’m used to eating wild game, so it would have to be a rough and tough, decidedly NOT CUTE rabbit killed in the wild for me to be able to eat it!

Seriously, I like your project. I think I would really enjoy raising chickens but I don’t know if I’ll ever try it. Hubby just harvests the wild for deer, turkey, and hog.

When I first looked at the post I thought, “How sweet, they are teaching their kids about caring and raising animals” then I saw they were for food! Still good experience for them, I just feel bad for the cute rabbits…I know, I know, God created them to eat, they are just so cute!!!

Have fun! These will be memories your kids won’t forget!

Ooooh, that’s exciting! I can’t wait till ours do that. We’re hoping to get one litter from each of the older does before the heat is too much. The little ones won’t be ready to breed until after the heat starts to diminish in the fall.

Fun, I love raising rabbits. Our doe just had 10 babies this morning (satin, New Zeland mix) the kids were thrilled, I have to keep reminding them that they are FOOD! lol

I think the butchering will be done in the garage. Hubs will teach the Cowboys that manly art. Remember, Mother Hen + blood = not a party!
Good going on getting the landlords to agree to the rabbits and the chickens. Pigs have a bad reputation, and I don’t have a clue if it’s deserved. I love ham and bacon and it would be a real treat to have a farm fresh pork roast, mmMMMmm.

Sounds super! Yes, I’d love to have that recipe! Thanks!

How beautiful! I love Energizer and the pink ears. Do you intend to dispatch the little guys in the back yard or do you have a professional to take them to and do it? Best wishes on the endevour. We’re going to start laying hens next spring and maybe move into broilers if the laying experience goes well. Rabbits would be the next thing to get and raise. I would love to do a few pigs but I’m pretty sure I can’t talk our Landlord into pigs. Rabbit cages and portable chicken pens are less intimidating to the owners and neighbors.

  9. Beautiful rabbits! My girls have 8 week old rabbits and we hope to get a meat breeding program going – yummy! If you need a good recipe for “Innards over Rice” I can give you one! :-) My parents raised rabbits when we were on the mission field, and we would have a wonderful brown gravy sauce with the hearts, livers, and kidneys chopped up… Hope that’s not too gross! Have a great day!
