I used to show rabbits in 4H as a child. I remember that the 4H rabbit handbook had a section on butchering rabbits. It seemed pretty informative at the time and had some pictures. My rabbit them was not a food rabbit though. My grandfather used to raise rabbits to eat. I never knew it until I was older. Now I wish we had space to do it. How tasty and fresh! :)

These bunnies are adorable....too adorable! I couldn't eat them. I'm used to eating wild game, so it would have to be a rough and tough, decidedly NOT CUTE rabbit killed in the wild for me to be able to eat it!

Seriously, I like your project. I think I would really enjoy raising chickens but I don't know if I'll ever try it. Hubby just harvests the wild for deer, turkey, and hog.

When I first looked at the post I thought, "How sweet, they are teaching their kids about caring and raising animals" then I saw they were for food! Still good experience for them, I just feel bad for the cute rabbits...I know, I know, God created them to eat, they are just so cute!!!

Have fun! These will be memories your kids won't forget!

Ooooh, that's exciting! I can't wait till ours do that. We're hoping to get one litter from each of the older does before the heat is too much. The little ones won't be ready to breed until after the heat starts to diminish in the fall.

I think the butchering will be done in the garage. Hubs will teach the Cowboys that manly art. Remember, Mother Hen + blood = not a party!
Good going on getting the landlords to agree to the rabbits and the chickens. Pigs have a bad reputation, and I don't have a clue if it's deserved. I love ham and bacon and it would be a real treat to have a farm fresh pork roast, mmMMMmm.

How beautiful! I love Energizer and the pink ears. Do you intend to dispatch the little guys in the back yard or do you have a professional to take them to and do it? Best wishes on the endevour. We're going to start laying hens next spring and maybe move into broilers if the laying experience goes well. Rabbits would be the next thing to get and raise. I would love to do a few pigs but I'm pretty sure I can't talk our Landlord into pigs. Rabbit cages and portable chicken pens are less intimidating to the owners and neighbors.

Beautiful rabbits! My girls have 8 week old rabbits and we hope to get a meat breeding program going - yummy! If you need a good recipe for "Innards over Rice" I can give you one! :-) My parents raised rabbits when we were on the mission field, and we would have a wonderful brown gravy sauce with the hearts, livers, and kidneys chopped up... Hope that's not too gross! Have a great day!
