Why, yes, I do have cows on my skirt.

My New Shoes

I actually got them about 2 weeks ago.  My hubs insisted that good tenny-shoes would make my knees and hips feel better.

He says I’m not as young as I used to be and I need better shoes.  He even used the phrase, “of a certain age” when referring to my knees and hips which, as I understand it, are just about the same age as the rest of me.  What a sweetie!

Guess what!  He was right!  About the shoes, not the “certain age” thing.  I mean, he’s the one who was at the Social Security office the other day.  I don’t think that’s what I set out to write about though.

The shoes!  My knees had been hurting so much that I could barely stand to rub them myself, and I would cringe when anyone else got within bumping-my-knees distance.  Uncanny how quickly you can learn these limits when spurred on by pain.

But here’s the deal.  The knees hardly hurt at all now.

We were watching Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End yesterday and I had my feet up, just enjoying the movie and I (out of habit) reached down to rub my knees and not only did they not hurt enough to bother with, they didn’t hurt to touch ‘em.

The hips are a little slower with the progress, but they’re coming along, too.

I couldnt’ be happier!  I feel so much better all over!

I’m sure some of the credit goes to having lost a little weight and getting off the vile, deceptive killer that y’all might still call sugar.

But I am so much more energetic and I just plain feel good!

Oh, the shoes?  New Balance.  I hesitated to pay $60 for shoes, but now I know just how wise (if tactless) is my hubs!

The Solar Oven

I have no news.  We have had clouds for days and days and rain for days and days before that.  I haven’t used the solar ovens in quite a while.

“The thing is, it’s very hot these last few days.  95° during the hottest part of the day, which is the part of the day I should be cooking supper and then eating supper, nevermind I’m suffering heat stroke by that time.  So that wise, old hubs of mine says to me, “Let’s buy an oven thermometer, and find out if the solar ovens are getting hot enough to cook food, even though it’s cloudy.”

He is rather smart.  He married me, didn’t he?

Anyway, today we are keeping a chart of times and temperatures reached in the solar oven.  If we get really ambitious we might test out the other solar oven tomorrow.  We made them almost the same except for the insulation.  In the spaces between boxes in Pete we filled it with scrap cardboard, all the way full.  In Re-Pete we used crumpled newspaper, not packed tight.  Now I’m curious.

Just do it! I waited forever, too. What’s up with that? Just do it! So cheap, so easy, I love not having my kitchen resemble hell!

  2. Oh, I really really really need to finally get my solar oven made after YEARS of dreaming about it. It’s getting HOT here in Florida and I can’t stand the thought of paying to use the gas stove, and then paying to cool off the kitchen! Arg!

Cardamoms Pod’s last blog post..Stay Tuned

Well, how fabulous is that! I think you could use an old cookie tray for the bottom of the oven to protect the cardboard. Our first recipe was brownies. Brownies are perfect for the solar oven because they are dark and so you don’t have to cover them. Our second recipe was lentil stew and the third was chicken with tomatoes (for tacos). I hope you have posted photos on your blog! Cuz I’m heading over to look! 8)

Yay for comfy shoes! =) There’s nothing like ‘em. And I like New Balance because they’re made here, not by some 5 year old in Vietnam or something. Worth the extra money methinks! =)

In other news, guess what I got for Mother’s Day? A solar oven!!! I’m not kidding! Bert spent several hours yesterday making it. =) He’s an engineer and somewhat of a perfectionist and therefore it took a little longer than it took your boys. =D He filled it with shredded paper so it will be interesting to see how that compares to your newspaper and cardboard stuffing. We’re also monitoring how warm it gets in the oven.

Bert also bought me a camp dutch oven! Woo hoo! =) We’re going to have to fashion some kind of metal plate for the bottom of the oven so that the little legs don’t puncture through the cardboard, but how cute is that that my husband was thoughtful enough to buy one for the solar oven? =)

I’m tickled, and looking forward to experimenting. =)

What did you find was an easy first recipe?

I hear ya about the Boy and the hose. Boys and mud are inseparable. Although in your case I guess it’s more like boy and wet rocks. 8)

We trashed our solar oven. It just wasn’t working out, and wasn’t durable enough. The wind tore it up, and I had nowhere convenient to store it while not in use.
The Boy and the garden hose were also not a helpful combination.

Age and weight are hard to endure, for sure.

I agree about the sugar. Always thought that would be wack-o. But then I read the book (Sugar Blues). No goin’ back once you know the truth.

My DH wears Brooks tennis shoes. They retail around $125 a pair (gag!) but he has been able to find them on e-bay for about half that. He needs about two pair a year and I cringe each time he orders. I don’t like to pay over twenty dollars for any pair of shoes (or any piece of clothing). I loved my Texas footwear. I wore flip flops almost all year. But I (thus far) don’t have any issues that require a better shoe. The DH on the other hand will be bedridden with back issues if he doesn’t wear the expensive shoes. Sigh.

I’m curious, too. :-) I’m also really, really glad that I’m not in 95* rain. It is raining here today, too, but the temp is a more manageable 51*.
Good news on the shoes. I’ve been buying “good” shoes for years, but still get hip pain. I wonder about moving up to great shoes. Cutting out sugar is just a little dramatic. ;-)
