I’m fed up!
What is up with the food? I was reading a lovely article about comparing the cost of homemade ice cream to store bought and then she said it! ”…natural flavors, (another name for MSG)”
WHAT???
How did I miss this info?
So, of course, I googled it. ”Define natural flavorings”
My head is still spinning.
Food addititves called natural flavorings are just a hoax. I knew that, but I didn’t realize the liberties that the food industry has been taking with that term.
The hidden MSG seems like a real bugger to root out and learn to detect, but I am determined to read and re-read all the info I can about this until I have thoroughly familiarized myself with the concept.
Apparently, anything that is not just the bare-bones, still in it’s natural state, no more than one, maybe 2 ingredients will now be on the chopping block. Or at least in need of more scrutiny than I have been giving ‘em.
Oh, I’m a label reader from way back, but I know I have skimmed over lots of the ingredients that are now on the list of hidden sources of MSG.
Here’s the thing that gets me down. Making every morsel of food my family ingests from scratch is a big bummer. It’s not that it’s so difficult, but it’s awful time consuming and labor intensive. But I have to keep pluggin’ away.
I just get rather annoyed, maybe I should say I get EXTREMELY INFURIATED over the food situation and just what is really in there. The fact that it is so pervasive and yet the wording is so slippery just gets stuck in my craw. It looks an awful lot like it’s an intentional deception. That may sound naive, but the flip side is just horrendous.
I am no expert researcher, and I’m sure I don”t know the half of it, but I am starting to understand the obesity/diabetes epidemic a bit more. Why would we expect our bodies to flourish considering we feed it a chemical soup every day.
End of rant.
You may resume your regular, everyday duties. But be sure to read your labels. I sure am.

We have an ice cream maker too, we should use it sometimes.
I really haven’t bothered to read up on just why MSG is bad for us. The reason I haven’t bothered is that the MSG gives me HUGE, RAGING migraines. I don’t need to know anything else. No further research is required for me. But you might want to find out why it’s hot button additive.
I hate that sneaky bit! I would love to be able to trust the folks making the food, but it ain’t so!
Right, most of the condiments are easy to make. As a matter of fact, most anything we eat is easy to make, it just takes learning how, and then scheduling the time to do it!
Hahahaha, because I need another thing to do.
You have a right to be infuriated. I commented on your friend with the ice cream too. I have been making my own for year now. Since buying a Cuinart ice cream maker I don’t remember buying another store bought ice cream container (unless kids won some cones for the local ice cream parlor). I especially am grateful for the raw milk and cream we get now that we are in the country. But I do not use eggs in my ice cream recipes. Our favs are coffee and peppermint. But lemon and blueberry sorbets (the citrus and berries in season or on sale) were a hit too. I also knew about the many different names MSG can be “legally” listed under. But, it’s a no brainer for me. I have no prob shopping at WM. Yes, I agree, it’s hard to make everything from scratch, that’s why some spaggetti sauce and a few select items just go in the cart and are later on blessed at the meal table and ingested with gratitude. But, it is unfortunate the MSG story. Health eating! Love your blog!
I share your frustration in general about “food” products and additives. I am for truth in labeling.
But I must admit I don’t share your concerns with MSG. It is a natural flavor enhancer and there haven’t been any studies to show it is harmful in any way. Maybe I’d be more wary if I wasn’t raised on Chinese food, but as it is…
It’s hard enough to keep out HFCS; that is in everything!
Yes, I read that article too and about flipped my head. WHAT? This world is getting so sneeky!

amen sista!
My oldest is on a corn syrup/white sugar free diet (and no artifical sweeteners)….basically EVERYTHING has to be homemade! Grrrrrrr….flip side to that, we are eating much better now!

I like your rants!
I agree – so infuriating – and the only natural response is to make EVERYTHING yourself. Well, as much as possible, anyway…

Mother!
You have enough info and research under your belt (and recipes too!) to write a little e-book on the dangers lurking in our “store-bought” food vs. from scratch options. I have begun to alter my families eating thanks to your blog posts. I rarely even go down the condiment aisle anymore and have cut down on sugar and HFCS. I’m with you on the down sides of preparing from scratch… it’s not hard just time consuming. How did the pioneer ladies do all they did. They had none of our “time-saving” gadgets and yet did more. My DH always tells me, “they were tougher and stronger back then.” He’s right. I’m down right spoiled but it’s not for the better.

I read that same article today. Now, I’m not one that worries about the things I eat…I’m not a label reader. Yes, that is probably a bad thing, but it’s the facts
However, isn’t it sad that there is the NEED to watch every little thing we put in our mouths because it’s a bunch of junk? Even the “good for you” stuff is really bad for you. Yes, I agree with you…it’s intentional deception.
