I love The Book of Virtues. Any book that has stories for everyone in the whole family, regardless of age, has my attention. I always appreciate any book with such wide application. The fact that it’s arranged, within each chapter, with stories for the youngers in front and the olders in back makes it so easy to use.
This morning, at the breakfast table, I read a few poems from the chapter on Self-Discipline. Since we’ve been sick we really need to tighten up the old self-discipline.
I ran across this little gem and Hubs declared it the next memory poem for the little folks ’round here.
Table Rules for Little Folks
In which we learn how to take our daily bread.
In silence I must take my seat,
And give God thanks before I eat;
Must for my food in patience wait,
Till I am asked to hand my plate;
I must not scold, nor whine, nor pout,
Nor move my chair nor plate about;
With knife, or fork, or napkin ring,
I must not play, nor must I sing.
I must not speak a useless word,
For children should be seen, not heard;
I must not talk about my food,
Nor fret if I don’t think it good;
I must not say, “The bread is old,”
“The tea is hot,” “The coffee’s cold”;
My mouth with food I must not crowd,
Nor while I’m eating speak aloud;
Must turn my head to cough or sneeze,
And when I ask, say “If you please”;
The tablecloth I must not spoil,
Nor with my food my fingers soil;
Must keep my seat when I have done,
Nor round the table sport or run;
When told to rise, then I must put
My chair away with noiseless foot;
And lift my heart to God above,
In praise for all his wondrous love.

Update… I did indeed print out the poem and place it on everyone’s plate when I set the table. It was of great interest and all the kids had fun pointing out each others lack of manners. We are going to use it each night until they have it memorized and utilize what they’ve learned.

I have a daughter who would just love the book of virtues. We have it, she being the avid reader would devour it. Thanks for making another book in my library useful again.

Thanks. I think that this will be our next memory poem. It is amazing how quickly that pendulum can swing from peace and tranquility to craziness and then back. Things can change quickly and I’m not telling which end of the swing we are on right now.
Time to get the Book of Virtues out again!

Love them too. Do you have the BIG one and the Kids version? I just got the kids one from 1/2 priced books and love it : )
I think we have a little one or two (or three or four…) around here that could stand to learn that one!
