I enjoyed your writing, esp. the rules for determining what junk not to chunk. A few years back we were amazed when we were walking down our street and a neighbor was throwing out his backyard wooden swing set (fort, slide, etc.---in nice condition). I slightly hesitated, but then quickly asked my hubby if we could ask him if they were throwing it out (we were having that "bulky trash pick-up day", too).

Well, they said we could have it. They were throwing it out b/c their kids were older. Wow. We were praising the Lord for that find!

Your bookshelf looks good as new! I love garbage picking... I once got an awesome rocking horse out of my neighbor's garbage. Little Bear used it when she was a toddler, and now Pufferfish loves it! We've also gotten bikes, toys and furniture that way. Hey, think of it this way... we're saving the environment by keeping that stuff out of the landfills!

I agree, Angie! It was a lot of work and I just love the result. I wish I had a before photo, but the rush was on!

I have been known to dive a profitable dumpster, but this is even easier. When gas was cheaper and I had more free time I used to troll too. Now I only peruse those I happen by in my normal routine.

How cool that you have both a day to throw out large trash, and the ability to sort through others'. Some cities have outlawed dumpster diving, but it is a fun and profitable sport.
(We've got a few handy items in this way, as military families are notorious for throwing away good furniture before a move.)
