I haven’t been to the mall in five years or so. I detest the place. But, my growing disdain for any shoes that come from WalMart has brought me to a state of foot-wear desperation.
It’s not for me, it’s for Slim. You know? The nine year old. Nine years old is Latin for “his feet grow while he sleeps.” So I can’t buy his shoes at Academy. It would be just asking for him to out grow them this week after spending $40 on them, bad idea. And I wouldn’t buy him shoes at all except he has none. Oh, that’s a lie. He had the sandals he wore to the mall, so he could bring his feet along to try on all the new shoes. But we threw those suckers away as soon as we got home. Unless it’s the new style that the toes should touch the floor in front of the sandal I don’t think they fit him anymore.
I went to Penney’s. So-o-o not in my price range!
Next stop, Payless, where we did in fact pay less. I bought him a pair of sandals long enough to accommodate his whole foot. And they were on clearance for $7. Totally in my price range.
Still shopping because the boy needs some footwear for playing soccer of a Saturday.
Following our trail from Penney’s to Sears we passed and went into Footlocker for Kids. Looked at some prices and ran screaming from that money trap.
Seems like there was another store where we had the exact same experience, but I have no recollection of the name of that one. But there was screaming and horror at the sight of the price tags on the tennis shoes. My word, do people really spend $80 on shoes for kids whose feet grow every night?
Finally made it to Sears where, even if the clearance shoes had been reasonably priced I wouldn’t have bought them. We don’t go in for cartoon characters on shoes, and by cartoon characters I don’t mean bugs bunny and mighty mouse. I may have done that. What they had were scary, evil looking things. Forget it.
Back to Payless where he “chose” (read- I chose for him) a pair of good looking athletic shoes for a good price. And by good looking I mean brown and gray (read- dirt don’t show so much) and by reasonably priced I mean clearanced to $10!

Nice finds! Two pair for less than a fourth of the $80 pair. I LOVE a bargain like that. And they’re nice looking shoes, too
Of course I almost never buy shoes for anyone other than the girls and now Steven and Brandon. Everyone else gets shoes from cousins, and friends that are in good condition. Steven and Brandon’s feet are too big for anyones hand me downs and we don’t have any girls in the family that can pass shoes on.
I have spent $40-$50 on shoes before, but they were for Brandon when he was little and it was because he needed the shoes for his feet…and the chiropractor said he needed a better shoe. It about drove me crazy…but now I buy them at Payless, Target or Walmart and get them at the best price. Just bought shoes about a month ago and did it on a buy one get one half off and also paid no taxes either (tax free weekend) I got 4 pairs of shoes and one pair was for Cedric.
Not only do people pay that kind of money, they pay it on baby shoes- yes baby shoes. Lucky for me my neighbor is one of those and her daughters feet grow overnight and just happen to be a bit bigger than my daughter:) I on the other hand do not pay that kind of money for shoes unless I know they will last me 20 years!!
I hear ya on the scary cartoon characters- what is up with that, they are now putting it on little girl clothes.
Aw, poor kid. I had feet like that. I remember wanting to wear the little girl styles and being so disappointed that they didn’t make them in my size.
It’s the ten year old daughter whose feet grow overnight at our house. She is now wearing an 8…the same size as her 21 year old sister.
