Homemade Breakfast Sausage

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed

This past week our grocery store had pork loin on sale, whole in the bag, for $1/lb.  Yes, we bought as many as we could.

Hubs was even able to convince one of the store “meat cutters” to grind one for us to make into sausage.

I’d been lamenting the recent reading of the label of my beloved Farmland Sausage, and then Hubs (who is always clever) said, “Well, why don’t you just make it yourself?”  Duh!  Yeah, I can do that.

And do you know?  It was easy!

I don’t know why I have such a mental block about some things.  I make a lot of things at home, you’d think that would be MY first thought.  But NO-O-O-O! I have to be told, “You can do this, ya know.”

Point being, if there’s something you’re wondering about doing at home that most folks just buy already made, speak up!  Let’s make a list.  Maybe it’s something I’m wanting to learn too.

I’m not up for things that take any kind of investment of $$$ or have a huge learning curve.  But, making breakfast sausage at home is no more a big deal than baking biscuits at home.

So, leave me some ideas in the comments.  Give me your list of things you’d like to learn to do/make.  And your list of things you are already  making at home that I would like to learn!

Here are a couple of sausage recipes to get ya started.

And remember, if you have a nursing baby you probably wanna stay away from the sage.  It can diminish your milk supply.  But, use a heavy hand when measuring the garlic, good for you & for the baby!  :D

What a beautiful sight!  Five pounds of breakfast sausage, made at home with wholesome ingredients and no weird MSG, BHT, BHA or any other unpronounceables!

    Oooh, neat thrift store find!

I actually do make my own sausage, and i found a nifty tool at a thrift store – it is a sausage press. You put some meat inside and smush it like play-doh, and then you have a patty! We freeze the patties on wax paper, then pile them into gallon size freezer bags. We can then pull them out one at a time and throw them on a skillet – they take about 10 minutes to cook through. LOVE IT!!! (and I love knowing what is in my sausage!)

    Hi Melissa,
No, I don’t have a meat grinder, yet. Hubs has been shopping online for a manual model. I was surprised at the range of prices, anything from the twenties to over 300. But we found what looks to be a durable model for about $50.
Candles and soap sound like fun projects.

I think we might try to make candles as gifts for Christmas, hmm and maybe soap. My extended family all think I’m weird because I make homemade bread, soup, cake, etc.

Do you have a meat grinder? I don’t think they’re very expensive. That is a great idea to make your own sausage.

I haven’t made soap in years. Have fun with your daughters! What a great activity. I look forward to seeing your lists.

Nope, you got the jump on me on that one. I have never even considered doing that. Sounds yummy! I wonder how a whole wheat version would taste. Now I need to go find some recipes for English Muffins! Grand idea!

Oh, this sounds great. I’ll have to think up some things I want to make on my own. I also need to think up things I already make on my own. For the most part I do them without thinking about it anymore, so I’ll have to remember the ones that people comment about when I tell them I make it myself. Of course, the one I’m really dying to try right now is soap. I have the ingredients and the supplies, I just want to wait ’til the girls get back from mom’s so we can do it together.

Hi, Jenny. Yes! I made English Muffins for the first time in my life yesterday. I don’t know why I waited so long. I’ve been baking other kinds of bread for years. They turned out wonderfully well and my guys really liked them. I cooked some beaten eggs, sausage, seasonings (that always means garlic and onion powder at my house) together, flat in the skillet. When that was done, I sprinkled on some cheese, then cut the eggs to fit the muffins. Homemade yummy egg muffins! I encourage y’all to try it. Or maybe I’m the last holdout and y’all already do that…
