- I mean teen aged boys
Rice and beans with cornbread is a very filling meal, and it’s very nutritious, and that is just what I’m gonna make for dinner tomorrow night.
Tonight we had pork chops, brown rice and corn for dinner. There’s eight of us and there were twelve chops. Oh, they all got eaten, and I was left with a bunch of half-starved vultures still hungry teen aged (and otherwise) boys sitting there at the table looking at me, waiting for me to remedy the situation.
Hmm, good thing I had Hank bake a couple of loaves of Banana Bread this afternoon. So, Tex got out the butter and the cream cheese and brought me a knife and a cutting board. They went through both loaves, a stick of butter and a half pkg of cream cheese like a school of piranhas! It was all gone before I really knew what was goin’ on. Good grief!
The point is this – it’s a whole lot more economical to feed a bunch of growing boys on homemade food than it would be to shovel out a bunch of factory made foods. Can’t imagine how many boxes of Little Debbie cakes it would have taken to satisfy those piranhas vultures boys.
I’ll leave you with this little gem of a quote from Tex, way back when he was a “starving” 13 year old. I asked him if he was ever full. His answer, “Only on Thanksgiving and Christmas!”

This is funny because I have 2 young girls who eat like birds. I can’t even imagine making that much food. I have heard teenage boys eat like this. Truly can’t imagine
Well, Jessica, you’ve called me on that one. Of all the family, I am the one who least likes the beans, and so I am most qualified to answer your question.
I don’t eat as large a serving. I make the beans mondo delicious with herbs and spices. I add toppings, cheese, sour cream, quacamole, whatever it takes. And I have little talks with myself during dinner. I talk (in my head) about what I will make for dinner on Saturday, and about being a good example for the kids, and about how cheap the meal is, and how much I appreciate my family who will gladly eat the cheap meals.
Really, it’s not all that serious. And I make pretty good beans.
How do you train the mama to eat beans?
Start early and don’t really give ‘em lots of options. Hungry kids eat food. Simple as that. If they live for the cornbread (and some of mine do) then dangle it out there. But make sure they clean up their beans before they get the cornbread. They’ll get the picture.
Ok, here’s a question – HOW do you train them to enjoy beans? My children refused to eat them from day one. The 14 year old is pretty much a lost cause – but how do I get the 4 year old to eat them?
Wow!!! And I thought my 2 year old girls eat a lot… Guess I better hold onto my socks so they don’t get knocked off.
LOL thats funny about the only time he is full….
Jessica, I hope you don’t mind if I repeat myself, but it’s just the smartest way to bring up boys, train them while they are little to enjoy eating beans. Cheap, filling, nutritious! These are the things you need when you have teen aged boys!
Well, yes, it is very much more economical, not to mention that it’s REAL FOOD, not just a string of unpronounceables.
Ritsumei, now is the time for teaching him to eat beans! Really.
Shelly, teach ‘em to enjoy beans, now! Seriously! It’ll save you a bundle in the long run!
Oh dear. I can’t wait until my boys are teens. I should probably start stocking up now (they are 6 and 1) lol
LOL Hilarious! I get that same look from my 13 year old boy EVERY MEAL. He’s real good natured about it, though. I agree about homemade stuff. I was looking through grocery store flyers last night and commented to my husband that I’m greatly encouraged that cooking mostly from scratch IS much more economical! Enjoy your vultures, I mean boys!
Funny. At least, it’s funny now, while my own son is 3! I’m sure I’ll blink and those 10 years between me and a teenager will be gone and I too will be trying to figure out how to fill him up!
I’ve got 5 boys (and 1 girl) who are littles ages seven and under right now… I have a feeling I’m getting a glimpse of my future!
Don’t you feel sorry for them? How awful would it be to be constantly hungry? I sometimes worry that I’m not giving my son enough meat – but then this post tells me it’s not necessarily meat that’ll fill him, but vast quantities of ANYTHING AT ALL. =D
