Since this is our first REAL cooking lesson I decided to go with a very forgiving recipe.  It’s really hard to mess up oven fries.

  • Easier for Sally Mae to accomplish this dish successfully (since it’s an easy one to make).
  • Easier for all those Cowboy brothers to give a positive response (since it really is delicious).

Since Sally Mae is only 6 years old I don’t expect her to do the dangerous parts of the work.  I handled the cutting of the potatoes and putting the tray in and out of the oven.  Sally Mae did all the rest with minimal assistance from me.

We had a great time.  She loved having so much more responsibility in the kitchen.  I enjoyed seeing her do things her own way.  Who knew there was more than one way to sprinkle the salt over the ‘taters?

Sally Mae is (naturally) more energetic in the kitchen than I am.  Why did that surprise me?  Ha!  You’ll notice her hands are a blur in some of the photos.  She’s all about speed and flair!  How.fun.is.that!

Here we go!  Sally Mae’s first REAL cooking lesson.

Parmesan Oven Fries 001a

Parmesan Oven Fries

Preheat the oven to 350°

You’ll need:

  • 8 medium potatoes, washed and cut into chunks
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 – 4 Tbsp Parmesan cheese (we used a tad more)

Press foil onto 2 cookie trays.

Brush some oil onto the foil.

In a large bowl combine the potatoes, olive oil, salt and cheese.

Stir it up to coat the potatoes.

Parmesan Oven Fries 009a

Spread the potatoes out on the cookie trays.  Don’t crowd them together.  They need a bit of space between them so they can cook evenly.

Parmesan Oven Fries 014a

Bake at 350° for 45- 50 minutes.

If you used a lot of cheese (like we did) the potatoes will stick to the foil.  Peel them off carefully.

The whole family thought these were just delicious!

I’d love for you to participate in my linky!  The first thing you need to do is write your post about teaching your child to cook.  If you like, you may put my banner in your post.  Add a link to this post and then come back here and sign up on the MckLinky.

To sign up on the linky you need to click the words “you are next” and that opens a new tab with the form for you to fill out.  It’s just 2 blanks.  The first one says “Title”.  That’s for your name and then, in parenthesis, the name of your post.  The second blank is for your permalink to your post.  Don’t use the URL for your Homepage, use the one to your post.  If you don’t know how to find the permalink then click here to read a good article on how to do that.

Although it’s not required, I’d sure be tickled to see my button in your sidebar when I visit your blog.

Good Job, Sallie Mae! Looks good!
Mother Hen, what a great thing you are doing with your daughter. I try to do this with mine (ages 9 and 5) also. I might link up one day but right now we just moved to Tx. and I have to much to do before I can start blogging regularly again. Though I don’t comment on your blog, I always look and enjoy it.
    Have a nice day!
    Christine

Aha!!! I did it!! I added your button to my sidebar, and I didn’t even have to ask Ri to help. She’ll be so proud. BTW – thanks for explaining how to do it, and never mind that I spent a couple of seconds actually looking for the word widget somewhere on my layout thingy.
