Congratulations! You have been to to Ship Full O' Pirates over 100 times! Just thought you'd like to know.
Can you believe I’m new to this. I’ve been making granola now for a couple of weeks, and my kids INHALE it every time. I could make a big batch of it every day. They enjoy it in a bowl with milk or without. Let’s don’t even bother telling them about eating it with hot milk.
I started making it because Kim said something about replacing cold cereal with it. I love the convenience of cold cereal. I don’t like the expense and I really don’t like feeding “mystery foods” to my kids. You know, stuff with more chemicals than food. And talk about INHALING mass quantities! Forget that!
I did the same thing that Kim did, you know, the homeschool method of multiple recipe evaluation/reformation. It turns out that granola is easy to make and hard to mess up. I know, some of y’all have been making granola for a century and can’t believe there are still newbies, but I bet some of y’all have never even considered doing it and need some encouragement. So, here I go.
Y’all, making granola is easy and you probably already have the ingredients.
Heat your oven to 375°, this only takes a few minutes to put together and 15 – 20 minutes to bake.
Crunchy Granola
- 2 sticks butter
- 1 c honey
- ½ c peanut butter (optional)
- ½ c finely chopped peanuts (optional)
- 1 c coconut shreds (optional)
- 1 c wheat germ or ¾ c whole wheat flour
- 8 c oats (either the old fashioned or quick or a mixture)
- anything else that sounds good
Put the butter, honey and peanut butter in your medium sauce pan. Melt over medium-low heat until the butter looks all the way melted or until the honey begins to boil, depending on how much attention you want to pay to this. I do it while I’m reading e-mail etc. and sometimes it begins to boil and sometimes not, seems to make very little difference in the granola. And really, once the Summer heat sets in I may skip the sauce pan altogether and just add the honey, butter and peanut butter straight into the oat mixture.
Put all the other ingredients into your big bowl. Pour the honey/butter mixture in and stir well.
Grease your 2 largest cookie trays, I just spray oil on ‘em. Then spread the raw granola out on ‘em.
Bake @ 375° for 15 – 20 minutes. Stir and re-spread half way through, then stir and re-spread one more time when it’s done baking.
Let it cool in the pans. Store it in a cannister in the pantry unless my kids are at your house, in that case you don’t need to fiddle around with putting it away, they’ll just scarf it down as soon as it’s cooled off enough to eat without burning their mouths.
By the way, today is my second bloggiversary, so, you know, send chocolate and cash! ;)

Peanut butter, olive oil, coconut oil. I don’t really know what the American Heart Assoc. recommends for that. Sorry.
This looks really good. I will have to try it soon! Any suggestions for something besides butter? My husband has high chol. and can’t have it…
Christine
Exactly! The kids can help themselves to the granola just as easily as the boxed crud. Win – win!
I’m going to have to try this. We are cereal eaters for breakfast and it “chaps my hide” to feed my kids processed corn for breakfast but it is quick and easy and the kids help themselves.
I may start doing that, the kids love this stuff!
I make it in batches. Three or four pans at a time. It takes me a couple of hours to make that much, but saves time in the mornings!
Why thank you, Michele. Now, where’s the chocolate?!?
Hi Anita! I love that part, not worrying about icky ingredients. How on earth do you make 32 cups of granola at one go? You must either have a huge oven or you just go in cycles.
Hi Melodie! Glad to meet ya!
Happy Blogiversary!!
Making granola is on my list of things to do today! I made 32 cups just three weeks ago and it is gone. My recipe comes from Sue Gregg’s Breakfast cookbook. I use oats, rice protein powder, olive oil, honey and cinnamon. That is for my nut and dairy allergic children. The other batch I make the same, but add chopped or ground walnuts and dried blueberries. I like to zap mine in the microwave. I really is delicious warmed up and still crunchy. My kids eat it all day and I am not worried about chemicals or too much fat or sugar!
Thanks for the tutorial, I have been curious about this and might give it a try later! Also, LOVE your blog. It is very inspiring and helpful and I live in Waco so I can identify with you on many things = )
