If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feedRachel has been begging me to buy flowers for…well, all her life.  And today isn’t the only day I’ve acquiesced, but it’s the only day so far this year.  She’s happy as can be with soil under her fingernails and in her hair [...]

Chicken Doctoring

This boy is my animal wrangler.  He’s an extreme dog lover, but he takes an interest in the chickens as well.  OK, he takes a massive interest in all animals. You’d be shocked to find out how little interaction I have with the chickens.  And the chickens would be shocked (do they care? not enough brain) to know that [...]

Counting my chickens before they are hatched…

Also known as CANDLING THE EGGS! Today is day 15 out of 21.  (Today meaning Monday, May 30th, around 11 p.m.) For the past half hour or so I’ve been peering into the future.    I was out in the barracks, in the dark, holding a flashlight, looking at secrets. I got to see life [...]

Massey Ferguson Fun and a short list of the best animal colors

I am a lame blogger.  Three of the boys had tractor driving lessons yesterday and the only photo I got was this one. Sorry ’bout that.  To make it up to you I want to show you photos of the cute kitten we got yesterday. But first, lets talk about being country kids, shall we? [...]

Home hatched chickens – take 2

You may have noticed that I mentioned KimC had been incubating some chicken eggs for us.  Well, not her personally, she’s far too busy for that.  She was using an incubator.  She and her kids were trying  to hatch some eggs.  Some from our chickens, some from their chickens.  They had a couple of incidents [...]

Happy Rooster

This is my beautiful Silver Laced Wyandotte Rooster. He’s the only grown rooster on the place since we had to kill the mean rooster last week. We have 15 laying hens and at least 29 more pullets growing up. I’d say he has good reason to crow!

Chicks Ahoy!

Now, y’all know I love raising chicks, but it’s such a relief to have them grow up big enough to live outside. The Black Sex-Links are older than the Golden Comets, but not by too much. They’ve lived separately up until today. Today they all moved into the little chicken coop out in the wide [...]

Homemade Chicken Feeders and Drinkers

Do you know that chicken feeders and drinkers (you might call them waterers) cost roughly $40 at the feed stores? SHAMELESS.HI.WAY.ROBBERY! When we first got chickens I just bought the spendy drinker and the spendy feeder, not realizing there was another way.  I know, you had a higher opinion of me than that, but I’m [...]

All our chickens – a list

Photos are at the end. I love chickens.  Love owning them.  Love raising them.  Love that they lay eggs for us.  Love looking at them.  Love learning about them.  I just love chickens.  Always have. I got my first chick when I was 3 yrs old.  It was Easter and we lived in the country, [...]
